Brewer turns down Fedora's job offer

OSU assistant said he will not leave to join USM staff.
The offer to return to his home state of Mississippi was tempting. But Oklahoma State receivers coach Gunter Brewer said Monday that he is very happy to be a Cowboy.
Brewer confirmed that he will not be joining Larry Fedora's coaching staff at Southern Mississippi as the Golden Eagles' offensive coordinator. Fedora was hired as Southern Miss head coach last week after three years as OSU's offensive coordinator.
Fedora expressed an interest in hiring Brewer, primarily for Brewer's ties to the state of Mississippi. Brewer worked as an Ole Miss graduate assistant under his father and former head coach, Billy, from 1988-90 and served as the head coach at Northeast Mississippi Community College in 1995. Also, Gunter Brewer's son Keaton is a freshman at Ole Miss.
"I just wanted to quiet any speculation about my future here. I firmly plan to remain a Cowboy," Brewer said. "I appreciate any opportunities about returning to Mississippi. But I love it here and my family loves it here. The opportunity here is so good now because of what we started."
OSU coach Mike Gundy said he was pleased Brewer would be staying on staff.
Gundy did not say whether Brewer would be elevated to replace Fedora as OSU's offensive coordinator. Brewer said that will be discussed after OSU's Dec. 31 Insight Bowl game against Indiana.
Fedora is also interested in speaking with OSU offensive line coach Joe Wickline and linebackers coach Todd Bradford about joining his USM staff.

I find it interesting that he wants to talk to the LB coach, since have the bashers of the defense keep claiming that our defensive coaches are to blame for our dismal performance on that side of the ball...

Whenever the day comes that we get a good set of DTs, that defense will shore up quickly, and these guys will suddenly look like geniuses. Geez I hope we can land a juco or two...

Well... we've already got verbals from two JUCOs; one a DT and one a DE, and hopefully we'll get a verbal tomorrow from DTs Swanson Miller or LeRoy Burgess.
JUCO DT Donaldson seems a little "small" on paper, but I loved his interview, where he pretty much said that he plans to start. I don't know if he can, but I love the attitude, and he has 3 years of eligibility left.
I think we'll be very much improved on the DLine this year since we only lost one DT, and we're likely to add 3 new guys to the mix (the two JUCO guys above (hopefully Miller or Burgess pledge) plus Ahmad Jones from redshirt)
Plus we get promising Richetti Jones and Blatnick from redshirt and the JUCO DE - to go alone with Jr Burton and RsSo Chinasa (who won a team award)
One paper it looks very promising with potentially three 300 pounders (Tea, Jones, Miller/Burgess), plus three 4-star DEs (Burton, Chinasa, Jones)...
and that's not including the experience that Jonathan Lewis, Quincy Patrick and Shane Jarka got at DT this season.
We might actually have a line with size, depth and "talent"... with the likely starting 4 having a decent amount of experience (Burton, Chatham, Tea, Chinasa)

If our defensive line is going to improve next year it's going to have to be done by guys already on campus. Now the new guys might add some additional depth, and thankfully Beckman learned that it's not a bad idea to build some depth throught they year and admitted his mistake this year in not doing so, but I can't think of the last time a juco DT has come in and had an impact his first year on campus. Most of the time they are nothing more than big bodies the first year that take up space. It's year two when we see them make a difference. Personally I'm looking at the 2009 season for the defense to make an improvement if it's going to make any improvement at all. By improvement I don't mean just getting about into the 70-80 range...I'm talking top 50.
As far as him talking to Bradford I think it has as much to do with the type of person he is and how hard he works at recruiting. Go with what you are familiar with, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the bang up job the defense has done or even how he feels about the defensive staff.

Bradford is a pretty good coach, and a very good recruiter. He's gotten some great talent for us so far this year. He's also been an offensive coordinator at BYU for two years, and has coached DB's, LB's, etc....really knows alot on both sides of the ball. I really like him, but I also know the Beckman wants to bring his own people in too. Not sure whats going to happen on that side of the ball.
I know Wickline and Fedora go way back, but I just don't see him leaving. He's got a great gig here.

I agree with your comments about getting it done with the guys on campus, which I'm actually quite pleased with; and with your comments about the first year impact of a JUCO... although what we really need is big bodies that take up space in their shifts as backups. Tea is a good example, he did good, but didn't bring down the house... same with McBean, Robert Jones, Antonio Smith, etc. I think guys like those helped in their first year's, which is what we need; some help to go with what we've got.
A starting front four of Burton, Chatham, Tea, Chinasa is pretty decent, but nothing special without some help. Richetti Jones and Blatnick are reportedly progressing nicely, and if the JUCO DE can contribute any at all, then we should be pretty good at DE (baring injury). Lewis, Patrick and Jarka all got some PT this year, which should help, then if we compliment that with Ahmad Jones, JUCO DT Donaldson and possibly JUCO DT Swanson Miller, that is a good number of bodies with experience and more importantly some good size with three 300 pounders, and a couple of guys around 290.
I think we could put in a DLine 2-deep that would be decent (probably as good as last year, likely better), then if the 3 JUCO Dlinemen can help at all, then we should be solid, and be able to stay fresh for a change.
I'm not looking for the new JUCO guys to start or be world beaters, just to be able to provide some decent relief.
It's the youth of the LBs that has me concerned; especially losing Collins and Brown, who could have helped this year.
The Line is only part of it, but usually defenses are discussed in terms of the front seven and secondary.
I think we have the potential to approach the top 50 with this defense; however, we still have a fair amount of youth in the 2-deep of the front seven.
In 2009 we'll lose both of our Senior DTs, so the guys providing relief this year better be making contributions or we'll be in a similar shape in 2009.
