STILLWATER — He now is viewed as a veteran and the leader of the Oklahoma State football team, but Zac Robinson has not been an opening day starting quarterback since 2004, his senior season at Chatfield (Colo.) High School.
In their ’04 opener at Jefferson County Stadium in suburban Denver, Robinson’s Chatfield Chargers were beaten 33-12 by the Arapahoe Warriors.
A few months later, he signed a letter of intent to play at Oklahoma State. Robinson attended high school in Colorado and was offered a scholarship to play with the Colorado Buffaloes, but it was not a surprise that he chose OSU.
Robinson, who turns 22 next month, is an Edmond native. His mother is an OSU graduate and his uncle wore the Pistol Pete mascot outfit.
On Saturday, when the Cowboys face Washington State in Seattle, Robinson gets his first college opening-day start. As a sophomore last year, he made 11 starts and broke OSU’s single-season school record for total offense.
Last season, Larry Fedora was your play-caller. This season, head coach Mike Gundy calls the plays.
I feel good with it. The last couple of weeks, we’ve been going down the call sheet (and determining) what will work (against Washington State). I feel like I know what he’s going to call most of the time.
With Dantrell Savage and Adarius Bowman in the offense last season, OSU averaged 35 points and 486 yards per game. Can production be comparable this season."
There are some familiar faces and some people that the fans don’t know, but from a talent standpoint, there’s no drop-off at all. I think there’s actually an increase from last season.
The offensive line is the centerpiece.
They’ve all been here for quite some time.
You are an extremely physical quarterback. At Nebraska last season, you splattered a linebacker with a downfield block.
That was one of my favorite plays. I looked to the sideline and everybody was fired up. I had fun doing that. I know I have to be (cautious) sometimes, but any time I feel like I can get a clean shot, I’m going to do it.
What have you learned from watching tape of Peyton Manning."
One thing that he does so well is to dump (short passes) to running backs and get 5 or 6 yards. That’s been something we’ve talked about this summer.
Your impressions of the Washington State defense."
We don’t know much. We’re just taking a shot in the dark, just guessing what they’re going to do. Hopefully as the game goes on, we’ll get comfortable with what they’re doing. It’s definitely tough, not having a lot of film on that.We can adapt on the run.
