View Full Version : Can Fedora leaving be a good thing?

Hands down Coach Fedora will be in the books as one of the most successful OC's in school history, but there were a few offenses that compared to Fedora's, maybe not in balance and yardage, but definetly in winning percentage. How about those 02 and 03 offenses run under Mr. Mike Gundy? An offense that went to three straight bowl games and offense that garners a better record overall than those of Fedora's. Granted we had somewhat of a defense in those years, but not much better.
My point is, Gundy has been a play-caller, he knows how to make good calls and make situational calls. He's worked with Fedora for 3 years and a couple of stints before. He will make this offense BETTER!!! I hope he runs the offense in the bowl game, I think most of us will be pleasantly surprised. Mike Ray Gundy is a gamer and knows the game.
Our problem moving forward WILL NOT be the offense. We need a defense. That's when you'll see better record than 6-6.

His leaving does clear up about 390k to spend on other stuff

As long as we stop calling that stupid outside screen pass 28 times a game. You know the play we run when it's 3rd and long and everybody including my 19 month old granddaughter knows we are about to run it. (See the play AD got hurt on) I hate that play.

How about 4th and two reverses??????
He was worthless. Glad he's gone:rolleyes:

Much like the change at QB, a new OC isn't going to effect the record of our football team. Until the defense steps up who the OC is won't matter. Our offense is going to put up points.

No, it's not a good thing. The man was a mad scientist of offense and I, for one, will miss him. I could see one arguing how his departure isn't as critical as some are making it out to be, but in no way is it a GOOD thing for our team.

Agreed. That first year was brutal, but the last two have been filled with offensive goodness. I liked the way things were going.

This will make or break Gundy! Mark it down.
If he loses and our offense is terrible from here on out, then Gundy will be gone.
If however the offense stays good then Gundy is a hero and the true reason for our success.
I pray for the latter of the two.

Absolutely NO WAY this could be construed as a "good thing". The offense can't become better by taking away one of the most important components.
The offense was the only phase of the game that I had complete confidence in. Now, at best, it's a question mark, same as the defense and special teams.

You guys are thinking awfully small, as if Larry Fedora is the end-all be-all of offensive coordinators. Hell, you guys don't even know who we are looking at as OC candidates...but according to you, there must not be a single candidate in NCAA Div. IA or even IIA worth his salt. Certainly nobody that can even lick the boots of The Great Larry Fedora.
If anyone thinks that we weren't prepared for the departure of ANY of the coordinators and/or assistants, and don't have a succession plan to kick into gear at any moment, you are delusional. Fedora had an opportunity to achieve a life goal, and took it. GREAT! Yes we will miss him for a little while, and wonder what we are gonna do....but that will pass when we install the NEXT great OC at O-State, and we will soon forget about Larry Fedora.
Give it a break guys....the poor-pitiful-pokes syndrome doesn't wash well anymore. We will attract a top-level OC. YOU mark THAT down. And as for those that tend to discount Mike Gundy as one who doesn't know how to win or put together a staff...he was the field colonel that led our teams to winningest series of seasons we ever experienced and then came back only to put together a damn fine set of coordinators and assistant coaches for OUR school. Boeckman is a winner, and will get his job done much the same way that resulted in Fedora becoming a darling in our eyes. The next OC, whomever he may be, will inherit a very attractive offense and personnel to go with it. Will it be hard to attract a very good OC? Hell, no. And a couple of years from now we'll be talking like this: "Hey, what about ol' whatshisname that left to go to....where was it?....south alabama or louisiana or someplace like that...yeah, I bet he wishes he stayed here now, hahaha....."

I guess your reading comprehension isn't working too well right now... I said that I can see how one could argue that it isn't as bad as people think. Meaning I think we'll be just fine. But as of right now, is our team better off for him being gone? If you think the answer is anything but no, I'm afraid you're sorely mistaken. I think we'll be fine. Even if Gundy is calling the plays himself we will have a great offense. But his departure is not a GOOD THING for our program.

My reading comprehension is fine. I see why you would say right now that we are not better off...but what is the point? Strategic decisions are not made for the next 30 seconds, and the overall health of the program can't be graded when there is a vacancy. The fact is that we don't know WHAT impact Fedora's departure is, and you certainly can't discount the potential that we actually upgrade with the appointment of the next OC.

And, I'll take it further. On your points, Chris, I might add.
Fedora leaving? NOT A GOOD THING!!!!
Do you think that anybody read " SUN TZU " and had an offensive playbook 4 inches wide, and wake up at 3 A.M., after having worked 16-18 hours, just to draw up an offensive play? He's an offensive genius. Plain and simple.
Do I think we'll be O.K. in the bowl game? Gut feeling tells me yes. But, I'm an optimist.
I also think that Gundy is more than capable of calling offensive plays. The sideline screen-pass would not have been called 12 times a game if Gundy were calling the plays (offensively, mind you). It just looked like Gundy had the confidence in his coaches to call that play as many times as he'd liked. He had confidence that one of his coaches saw something that was a mismatch. He didn't pull a Les Miles and over-ride a pass play, just to call a run play up the middle on third and long, although we saw some of that too.
Remember when Bill Clay said that we didn't have the horses, and/or we hadn't recruited the horses to run his '4(score)-2-5? I do.
I like a Coach that has faith in his coaching staff. Now, it's time to have faith in Gundy and his coaching staff. Again.
Have a little faith.

i think the loss of savage and bowman will be more noticable . hopefuly pettigrew will stay another year. like another poster said the way the defense plays will determine how good a season we will have.

And that poster would be me.
We've recruited well on the offensive side of the ball. PLus, we have depth there. Defense, my young padwans is what will bring a better than average record at the end of the year.
Hopefully, a cupboard full of redshirts this past year will help. I also think we'll get some help on the depth in the secondary with the JUCO safety,Luciene Antoine. He's not as fast as what we've typically recruited at safety but he's a big hitter. Similar to what Quinton Moore is, but bigger and more equipped to stop the run. Not saying that we don't have good athletes right now, it's just they need some help. Defensive line recruits are crucial right now, that's where we need depth. We might have a decent starting 4 up front, but they are young and need help.
JUCO All-American Swanson Miller 6-2 300 DT, who's supposedly on campus right now, would be a huge get IMO.
Defense wins championships people.

hey johnforosu how are we set for defensive ends and cornerbacks ? i would love to get 2 hs recruits for defensive ends and 2 jucco defensive ends because i thought if we could get pressure off the ends it might help us get turnovers . but the truth be told i will miss ole donnovan woods and martel van zant .
would it be safe to say that if we could sign 3 jucco defensive tackles and 2 cb's (high school or jucco ) that should put us in good shape? i dont tink we will sign 3 jucco dt's but i would not oppose it either.

DE isn't really our problem on the front four. With redshirt freshmen Jamie Blatnik, Richetti Jones, and newly converted DE Shane Jarka to provide depth with probable spring starters Ugo Chinasa and Derek Burton, we're pretty stacked on the outside. It's the inside we need to worry about.
We need some solid depth at DTs. Tonga Tea and Jeray Chatham will be the seniors but we'll see the redshirts fromm this year in action for sure. Players like Ahmad Jones, Jonathan Lewis, Quencey Patrick along with JR. Allen Oh , none of which have had extensive playing time and Jones and Patrick the first time seeing the field for the first time. Going to a bowl will help with the extra practices with them.
As for the secondary, I have a hunch new "soft" committ Markelle Martin might start out at safety, but don't expect too much from a true freshman and he might entertain WR when first evaluated on campus and maybe even redshirt, assuming he's 100% committed as he says. JUCO safety Luciene Antoine will provide depth at safety and will be able to help support the run. Thoughts of Kye Staley have been mentioned at safety, but I can almost bet he'll be looked at on offense first and with the injury to Toston, I imagine Kye will start off running the ball. Other than that we have offers to 3 prep DBs out of Texas, with my early favorite Zavier Gooden, a big, fast safety out of Pflugerville,Tx. But he's garnered the interest of Oklahoma and Kansas State so we'll see. We got work to do on him.
Swanson Miller, JUCO AA DT, would be a good get, but he still has visits.
Looks like so far, we've got a good class going, we'll see how many sign in February and how many of those that sign, actually make it on campus. We're not even close to the finish line. But Gundy is doing rather well especially the past two weekends with several big committs
