Rule change could help Cowboys
http://blog.newsok.com/osu
By Mike Baldwin
This year college football is changing its clock rule similar to the NFL. Once a play ends the clock automatically starts at 40 seconds, even on running plays and completed passes where the runner heads out of bounds. Similar to the NFL, each offense will probably lose around 10 or more plays a game.
In the past the official would start a 25-second clock that began only when the ball was placed down.
“Now as soon as they put the ball down we can run another play,” said coach Mike Gundy. “The official used to stand over the ball (and you couldn’t snap it until he left). He won’t stand over it any more.”
So could it be an advantage for a spread offense that goes with a no-huddle approach?
“We’ll see,” Gundy said. “They did stop us (from a quick snap) sometimes in the past. Now we won’t have that. Out of bounds plays don’t start on the snap any more.”
While the rule change is designed to shorten the overall length of games that sometimes go 31/2 to 4 hours, it could be a slight benefit for the Cowboys because of their no-huddle approach.

I saw the title of the thread and was hoping it was some kind of rule that limited the amount of time that the defense could be on the field.

We don't need a rule for that. As soon as the other team scores, the defense leaves the field.

I guess I just don't understand the point behind all of the "let's shorten the games" rule changes of the last few years. Why would anyone want LESS football?

it's all for TV. They want to predict how long a game will last for scheduling purposes.
I've had many OSU games cut short on the broadcast so that TV could air their scheduled broadcast of a Pac 10 game.
Once was and overtime game against A&M....

as for helping OSU... it might help on the offensive side, but it also gives our defense less time to line up, and could contribute to defenses getting more tired late in the game if they don't have that extra half minute or so to rest between plays.
It should help teams that have a little more depth on defense, that can keep some fresh bodies in there. OSU should be okay this year (with rotating depth), but it definately would have hurt some of our past defensive teams.

Another good reason for not living on the west coast. ;)

what are you up to now, 2 reasons?
oh, wait, you can't count that one since the rule changes should correct it.
What's the other reason?

1.fruits & nuts
2. $4.50 gallon gasoline or is it higher
3. earthquakes

Some "scattershooting" (with apoligies to Blackie Sherrod):
gives our defense less time to line up
Hopefully, we'll show something this year that resembles a defense. If it's another year of minor improvement on suckage, time to line up won't matter.
could contribute to defenses getting more tired late in the game
If we can't stop anyone, does fatigue really matter?
it "definitely" would have hurt some of our past defensive teams
Scary to think what the '88 boys would have given up, but then we have the '07 boys, so......

Well, another would be I don't speak Spanish, if we are talking about just California. It is the State language now isn't it? ;)
When parts of the United States start falling into the ocean, I want to be living as far inland as I can. ;)
If we are talking about the LA area, there will never be enough traffic lanes to handle all the cars. Gray cloudy skies and oxygen masks should not be the norm for one's life either. ;)
These reasons alone may outweigh the positives of living in the beauty of the Golden State.

Ouch. Ignorance is more painful than bigotry; and there's plenty of both in this thread.

You are absolutely right. The average gasoline prices for the West Coast are not that high yet. It's just California.

Bigotry? I see no bigotry here.

great job legal, ignore the "spanish" and "fruits & nuts" comments, and then only post about ONE of the points posted...
for the record, California requires a "reformulated" gas during the Summer to help cut emissions which costs more, and has higher fuel tax for road improvement; and is the 4th largest producer of oil in the country behind Alaska, Texas and Lousyanna.
Sure gas "costs more", if you include the good things that the State is trying to accomplish... the State could pollute more and let the vast infrastructure crumble.
:vomit-smiley-001:
now back to the thread; sans the attacks on other States.

You are reading far too much into the Spanish issue and what's wrong with one's right to not associate with certain crowds and their orientation. Not all of us run restaurants or businesses open to the public. Personally, I have some friends and clients that are either Hispanic or homosexual. Would it help you to know that I have family that had no choice to have ties to either of these groups that I love very much. That doesn't mean that I want to live in Mexico or any other country whose national language is one that I cannot speak or write. It also does not mean that I enjoy heavy doses of homosexual pride.
Thanks for straighting us out on the fuel issue in the Golden State, but when do you think the rest of us will be good enough for that State to start off shore drilling.
Sorry for my part in getting off the subject of your thread, snuffy. Maybe someone will have more to say now that is more in tune to your title.

You're something else... I get it, there aren't any homosexuals in Iran or in Oklahoma...
California has lots and lots of offshore drilling... you can see the rigs off the shore in Huntington Beach, they're decorated like islands off of Long Beach, and there are plenty of offshore rigs around Santa Barbara.
Sure there are large Spanish populations in California, it use to be part of Mexico... duh. There are very large populations of Vietnamise, Chinese, Japanese, Armeians, Basques, Koreans, Indonesians, and tons of other non-english speaking people... lots and lots of Okies too.
There are three million people in the County that I live in (Orange), and I promise you they are not all spanish speaking, and it is heavily Republican and CONSERVATIVE.
What's the population of Oklahoma again?
The State would not vote for liberal democrats if they hadn't jerrymandered the voting districts a few years back. Arnold tried to change that, but he botched the special election so badly that many people just voted NO on everything just to spite him.
How about that rule change in football?

If TV doesn't want games to extend past three hours from start to finish, have 30 minute quarters and don't stop the clock for any reason except for time outs and major injuries. That way a passing play does not have an advantage over a running play.

so why are they (left coast press) saying there is NO drilling??
