View Full Version : QB-Recruiting...my thoughts

Alright. I know we lost out on Moore with his commitment to Ole Miss. Here's my thinking. Why are we taking a QB this year? We've got Alex Cate, who may I remind you was one of the top rated QBs in his class, to usher in a new era when Zac runs out of eligibility. You've got Weeden who could very well win the starting job over Cate once Zac leaves ensuring a decent back up to the starter. Why don't we wait and go after a top rated QB next year and spend time recruting him until then. That way we don't settle for a three or four on our board. We can wait and go after a one or two. JMO. What do you all think?

The old "Jai Lucas" recruiting theory?

Ask Sean how that works, lol.

Alex Cate running our offense doesn't scare me much if I'm a defensive coordinator.

Probably not a bad idea to take one qb in each class...especially
athletic kids that can play wide out or db...
But when you only have ,what 14 or 16 ships to give, this
may be the year to pass if you can't get a 4 star??

We passed this year. I don't believe they will pass two years in a row. Weeden was a walkon that helped not taking anyone, but you know they are going to get a guy. Allen, at nearly 6'5, and 200 is a pro style qb, that has the ability to run. They will run him more in high school this season. He is very intriguing, and has an offer from us now. He could be VERY good someday.

I think we can win a LOT of games with a QB like Allen. He's reportedly very accurate with a strong arm and has good speed (4.7). While his speed isn't as much of a threat as Zac's, it's probably good enough to avoid some pressure.

I think of Riesing (KU qb) and Chase Daniel. Neither of those guys are blazers, but they definitely kept plays alive with their feet. Both are very accurate passers. Both programs won a lot of games this past year.

I was not very impressed with our backup quarterbacks. I think we need to continue picking up one quarterback each year. I'd like Tettleton. I think he's a gamer like Fields.

I agree with what's been posted in that we need to sign a QB this year. Our backup QBs are hardly more than serviceable. I hope I am underestimating them, but I think the next QB we sign will likely be our starter after Zac leaves.

We only have 3 quarterbacks on campus. This isn't nearly enough and remember that any QB we sign next spring will likely need a redshirt year to get up to speed. That means that any QB we recruit now will only keep us at 3 QBs once they are ready as Zac will be graduated. Zac has 2 years left, Cate has 3 years left, and Weeden has 4. We really need a QB to be added this year for the progression and if Weeden hadn't walked on we would be in a dire situation. I remember only a few years back when we were down to our 3rd string QB for awhile....

Taylor McHargue, with 4.5 speed, would be a good one to redshirt and put into the rotation. Speed is not something you can teach while throwing the ball is coachable. His speed would also let him play elsewhere on either side of the L.O.S. Go Pokes!!!!

You guys who doubt the backups are morons. Cate is the best QB in the big 12 right now.

Yeah, I love our backups, I just wish they had some game experience.

Gundy better get both of them in there during the first 4 games!!

I guess I really hadn't thought about that. Now that I think of it, I remember RA saying earlier in the spring that Cate wasn't that explosive and the coaches were'nt really impressed with him coming out of spring drills. Yes, he knows the offense but just really isn't that explosive game breaker we need. Weeden is still learning.

Allen is intriguing, but isn't he like our third or fourth guy? I like his size, but he's more of a pro-style QB who likes to drop back and pass. Remember how our last pro-style QB worked out in this offense. I say we take him if we have to this year, see how he develops in a spread. He's got good speed and from his film it looks like he's tough and composed in the pocket, great arm too. We'll see if we can beat out Ole Miss this time for a QB

The QB who seems to be the most talented among the QBs we are recruiting is Tyrik Rollison. He is said to throw the ball with pinpoint accuracy. He was first team all-state in Texas Class 4A as a junior in 2007. That season he finished with nearly 3,600 yards passing and passed for 37 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He also ran for 7 more touchdowns.

Rollison completed 70% (69.9%) of his passes, a far higher percentage than Clayton Moore's 52.8% or Drew Allen's 52.4%.

A knock on Rollinson is that his academics may not be good. But Rollison's excellent touchdown-to-interception ratio of 37-to-10 is a sign of good decision-making in the passing game. A 4.0 student may study and learn our offense quicker than Rollison, but Rollison has "streets smarts" when it comes to actually playing QB.

Drew Allen also showed some good passing decision-making with a 28-12 TD-to-interception ratio.

I like that Tettleton has big-time OSU ties, but his TD-to-interception ratio in 2006 (as a sophomore) was 10-10. Last season Tettleton sat out with an injury. If we still have a scholly open for a QB in the fall, and if Tettleton shows a great deal of improvement, it might be good to offer him then.

I am also a fan of Rollinson. Ranked the #2 duel threat qb in the country and said that we are his favorite even though we have not offered, and teams like Florida St have.

Watching his video's, his footwork needs some work. He seems a bit raw at times, but is very acurate. He doesn't like to run, but runs well when he does. The staff like him, but not as much as the 4 others they offered ahead of him I guess.

Nice first post by the way. Welcome!
