View Full Version : What we've accomplished this decade...

Through the last eight football seasons (dating back to the 2000 year), OSU is 48-48 overall. While that is not where I hope our program is over the next 8 years, it certainly is a vast improvement over the dozen or so years prior to 2000.

What we’ve accomplished the last eight seasons:

• Wins over five Nationally ranked Top-25 teams
- #3 Oklahoma (2002)
- #4 Oklahoma (2001)
- #13 Texas Tech (2005)
- #20 Nebraska (2006)
- #22 Kansas State (2003)

• Wins over two Big-12 Champions
- Kansas State (2003)
- Oklahoma (2002)

• Wins over three Big-12 North Champions
- Nebraska (2006)
- Colorado (2004)
- Kansas State (2003)

• Five Bowl appearances (the most ever in a six year span).
- Insight Bowl (2007) vs Indiana
- Independence Bowl (2006) vs Alabama
- Alamo Bowl (2004) vs Ohio State
- Cotton Bowl (2003 season) vs Mississippi
- Houston Bowl (2002) vs Southern Mississippi.

• Seven wins over traditional football powers
- Nebraska (2007/2006/2002)
- Oklahoma (2002/2001)
- Alabama (2006)
- UCLA (2004)

• Four wins over regional rivals.
- Oklahoma (2002, 2001)
- Tulsa (2004, 2000)

Again, this is not by any means where we want to be in the end. Fact is many schools in the Country (as well as our state) have more to boast about in this time frame. But, many schools in the Country (as well as our state) have much less to boast about in this time frame. As far as where we are today, our Cowboy football program certainly appears to be making progress towards our ultimate goal of competing for Championships.

I think what many Oklahoma State fans fail to do is to put things in a proper perspective.

That isn't to say I don't want Big 12 or national championships, but when you consider that the football program damn near got the death penalty two decades ago, I for one think it's fairly remarkable that OSU is even in the position to be a conference power.

Case in point - just look at Southern Methodist. A lot of people might not realize it, but from 1980 to 1985, SMU had the winningest record in Div. I-A football. SMU finished No. 21, 7, 2, 19, and 8, and played in the Cotton, Holiday, Aloha and Sun bowls in that span, meaning their program was heading in the right direction before they got the death penalty.

Looking at SMU now, it's obvious they've got a long way to go - even though the financial commitment to football seems to be there. They have nice facilities, excellent academics, and a large recruiting base, but they're still struggling to keep up even in Conference-USA.

A BIG BIG problem we have had over those eight seasons is we are on our third head coach and fourth defensive coordinator. I personally think Gundy has hit a home run with Beckman, and I am pretty sure we won't have another new head coach in the next eight years, so I expect stability and agressive, positive growth and success for our football program.

What was our record through the first 8 seasons of the '90s? I bet we didn't come close to sniffing .500.

What scares me is what if it takes us another decade for us to achieve the same consistency level as say a Texas Tech has for the past 10 years? They've missed what...one bowl game in the past 10 years in 1999. In July 2007, ESPN ranked Division 1-A football programs on performance from 1997-2006 and placed the Tortilla Slingers at number 32...OSU placed 56th (UT was 3rd, uO was 5th, A&M was 29th, Baylor was 101, making us a distant fifth in the big 12 south.

While I'm happy with our progress...we've got a ways to go even to be at the same consistency level as Tech...and it pains me to say it...but the truth hurts.

Go Pokes.

We are currently at ground zero with respect to Tek and aTm. I expect us to finish ahead of both programs consistently, starting next season.
