OSU Notebook: Rookie marvel

Oklahoma State freshman guard James Anderson scored 26 points, second-best total of his eight-game college career, in a victory over East Tennessee State. He set a school freshman scoring record with 29 points in his collegiate debut.

"I love Anderson," ETSU coach Murry Bartow said. "Anderson is without question going to be in the NBA. He's a great player and we knew that coming in, but he really hurt us."

Anderson hit six 3-pointers, most by an OSU player this season.

Making amends: OSU won despite allowing ETSU (which ranks 27th nationally in field goal percentage) to shoot 51.1 percent. It marked only the second time in Sean Sutton's two seasons as head coach that the Cowboys won when permitting an opponent to shoot 50 percent or better. The other instance came in a victory over Syracuse last season.

OSU shot 41.4 percent against ETSU, but outscored the Buccaneers 39-18 from 3-point range and 17-11 at the free throw line.

Different reactions: OSU fans booed when it was announced at halftime that Florida's Tim Tebow won the Heisman Trophy. They cheered when it was announced that Oklahoma's basketball team lost to Stephen F. Austin.

Nonleague success: OSU has won 141 of its last 144 games against nonconference opponents at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Wreaking havoc: OSU leads the Big 12 in turnovers forced (22.6 per game). The Cowboys harassed the Buccaneers into 25 turnovers. It was the sixth time in eight games that an OSU opponent had at least 20 turnovers.

Numbers game: The jersey number (42) of former ETSU player Tom Chilton used to be retired. Chilton gave permission for the number to be un-retired so the Buccaneers could give it to junior college transfer Kevin Tiggs, who leads the team in scoring. Tiggs was the junior college Division II player of the year last season and scored 13 against the Cowboys.
