Gundy: Reid got a fair shot

By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

Gundy responds to the ex-QB's interview with ESPN.com, where Reid criticizes his former coach.

STILLWATER -- In an interview with ESPN.com, former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid says coach Mike Gundy's infamous September tirade "basically ended my life" and was a factor in Reid's decision to leave the Cowboy football program.

'Our relationship after that kind of faded away," Reid told ESPN.com. "When that rant happened, I was like, 'Blugggh, I don't think this is for me anymore.' "

After two games last season, Reid was benched by Gundy. Reid had been the veteran of 20 career starts. His replacement, Zac Robinson, went on to break the school record for single-season total of fense and led OSU to an Insight Bowl victory over Indiana.

On Saturday, following OSU's Orange-White spring game, Gundy said he had not read the ESPN.com story, but is familiar with its content.

"When you're in a situation like that, nothing good is going to come out of it," Gundy said. "You have a young man (Reid) who wanted to be the quarterback. You can say what you want, but he got beat out.

"We make decisions on who gives us the best chance to win. I don't care who it is. I don't really see what the issue is. I guess there are some concerns on (Reid's) side that he didn't get a fair chance. I hate that he would feel that way. We put a guy (Robinson) in that had earned it, and then he never gave the job up."

Reid now is a senior quarterback at Texas Southern, a Division I-AA program. In January 2004, he arrived in Stillwater as perhaps the most nationally renowned quarterback recruit in OSU football history. In December, Reid graduated with a degree in education.

In the ESPN story, Reid's mother, Rajika Reid, was critical of Gundy: "Being 40 doesn't make you a man. It's your character that makes you a man. Your integrity. That's what makes you a man. Not how old you are. I read a Chinese proverb one time in a restaurant, and it said, 'A fool at 40 is a fool always.' That tells you everything."

Robinson made his first home start in a 49-45 victory over Texas Tech. Following the game, Gundy used his press conference to angrily renounce an Oklahoman newspaper column that the coach felt was unfairly critical of Reid. Gundy's rant ("Come after me? I'm a man! I'm 40!") has been viewed more than 1.5 million times on the YouTube Web site.

Reid told ESPN.com that he felt Gundy's press conference "was all a big show. It didn't feel genuine."

It's your character that makes you a man.

Pouting about losing the starting job doesn't show much character at all.

That ESPN article is putting a big ole black eye on BR's career. Sometimes it's best to just deny an interview.

The whole reason the rant happened in the first place was because Rajika brought the story to Gundy's attention . Gees, talk about neurosis. Probably best the young man is no longer with the program. Rajika needs to mee the ex-QB from Arkansas' mama. THey can have an enabling party together.

I think back and compare how Donovan handled his losing the starting QB position compared to BR, what a difference. Although, I will say that at least Bobby didn't bring this to the media until after the season and after he was out of the program.

Regardless of how you meant it, I'm glad you used the word "losing" because I never believed that Donovan was beat out.

Well, I am not surprised by Reid's mothers comments... she is going to believe her son got screwed and that he wasn't given a fair chance.

When your son is billed as being the best recruit/QB to ever come to a university... you probably assume he will start for four/three years and be the man....

Only problem with that is, that he wasn't the best QB in the program.... Coaches have to make decisions that are best for the program... not individuals.....

What his mom should have done instead of complaining and blaming Gundy for her son's performance is to get on to her son for not taking the opportunity to start at a defensive position and still be a stand out (like D. Woods) and make an impact... maybe his mom filled him with such bullcrap about how great he was that she couldn't see the writing on the wall when clearly Robinson was making things happen more.

I really feel that D. Woods should have been the QB one more year and let Reid make the transition a little easier.... but when you make promises to recruits... you kinda get in a bind...

So what it comes down to is Reid didn't get the job done... so Gundy did that??? Gundy caused him to play bad? Make mistakes???

That's what gets me about some parents ... their kid is "top of the world" wherever they are at whatever they do and they think that applies everywhere else in the world. Then, to make matters worse, they foster that same elitist philosophy on their kids. To me, that is what BR's mom is like: she thought her son was the bomb (nothing wrong in that), but thought everyone else should bow down to him (EVERYTHING wrong with that).

Look, I have nothing wrong with instilling confidence in your child if they excel at something; however, there must be the caveat that somewhere out there somebody is working just as hard to be just as good or better than you.

Amen.

Oh, and let's not forget what a character builder quitting the team was for him either.

What a douche.

I dont know about all of you but, at a very young age my mom stopped being that "crazy" that freaks out about everything!! If I were Bobby the first thing I would have done is tell my mom I love her but please put a sock in it because you are embarassing me and your the one ruining my life!!

Seriously, I hate that he lost his job, but a person's true character shows when you are in the midst of a problem.
