Gillespie or Calipari?
I would prefer Calipari -- recruiting; he has Final Four experience; would be good story matching Calipari of OSU vs Self of KU; no alcohol problems that we know of; and I just think he is a better coach than Gillespie.

Larry Brown.
He would do a lot with this program over the course of 3 or 4 years, then we can make another run at Self when Brown is ready to bolt.

This would be my second choice scenario if Self says no now.

Bruce Pearl. Then Calipari.
No to Gillespie, period.

What really has Bruce Pearl done that makes him so attractive as a coach?
From what I understand, He has never gotten past the elite 8 as a HC. I havent researched it, so Im not 100% sure on that.

I know it was mentioned in the past, but now the name has fallen out of favor(?) ... what about Mark Few? Good recruiting, NCAA tourney experience, would be a "step up" from Gonzaga ...
Thoughts?

I thought I heard Larry Brown was only interested in coaching for another two years. I'm not sure OSU wants to go through this again in another two years.

My feelings are that it will be Bill Self. I am very confident about this. Lets hope it happens in the next 7 days or so.

have we roled out Phil Jackson or Greg Popovich?
Chief-Poke

No Phil Jackson roll-out Lew, there is not a hotty daughter in upper management that Phil would require as a benefit.
And for Popovich, no tailors in town, plus he looks like a drinking man.
Besides we got one professional already in the mix, the bored coach.

Jackson-I am sure he would do well from the KD, Theta or whatever house is on top.
Popovich- A drinking man with rings is fine with me. Just call a cab, and get your work done, he's the basketball coach , not the chaplain.

Guys, forget Calipari. That just will not happen.
1) Is a VIP here in Memphis. Hobnobs with the elite of this city.
2) Has a great recruiting base developed throughout the area.
3) Play games in GIA or play to a sold out crowd at the FedEX Forum.
4) Has his very successful restaurant here in town.
And I could go on and on.
And Pearl? Not sparkling clean there.

what did I miss?
When did it go from 100% "reliable sources" guarentee of Self, to ... gee, is there anybody out there that we think we can get?

I have never waivered on my statement that it will be Self.
We are just playing a "what if" game. That is allowed.
Self is coming.

Memphis, what did Pearl do? The only thing i have heard about him is busting another school for violations and getting black balled for it.

I just don't see the facination with Bruce Pearl. All I have ever heard is that he is hard to get along with. I can't imagine that would be a good mix with our AD. I don't see any of the coach's sons being an option: Tony Bennett, the Drews, etc. I'm not sure an east coast guy is a fit. Hmmmmm. I wonder who that leaves?

What about Tubby Smith? Did a darn good job at Kentucky and have heard that he might like to come back to Oklahoma to coach again.

If it is my choice to make, (and since all of this is wild assed speculation, it is) I would prefer a younger coach than Tubby.
I like Pearl, and his spirit, I like Gillespie, even with the DUI's, I like Callaperi, I like Dixon, the WSU coach, ect.
There are a ton of good coaches out there, lets be patient and see how this plays out. Remember, Self controlled the timeline till now.

Including put them on probation...has he ever left a program without putting them on probation (UCLA and KU)? Oh, and Calipari also is famous for his best player being paid for (Marcus Camby at UMass)...I'm not saying they are bad coaches, but they come with a certain amount of risk...
And if you're going to take a risk on a cheater, why not Kelvin?
