Fedora viewed as a candidate

Sources say he has talked with the Southern Miss athletic director.

Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora is viewed as one of the leading candidates for the head coaching position at Southern Mississippi.

Reached Wednesday on his cell phone, Fedora declined to comment about the possibility of becoming the new coach at Southern Miss.

"My focus at this moment is getting ready to play Indiana in the Insight Bowl," Fedora said.

Sources said that Fedora has spoken with Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini this week about the vacancy. Jeff Bower resigned under pressure Nov. 26 after 17 years as the Golden Eagles coach.

Fedora is one of several names linked with the opening. Giannini has spent the past week talking with possible candidates. Giannini told the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger that it is possible he will speak with at least 20 potential candidates before narrowing his list down to at least three finalists.

"It's still going, but I'd say we're getting closer to it," Giannini told the Clarion-Ledger on Wednesday.

Fedora, Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Mississippi State defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson and former Auburn coach Terry Bowden are believed to be the candidates at the top of Giannini's list. South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix, a former Southern Miss assistant and player, removed his name from consideration Wednesday.

Fedora's OSU salary is $393,000, which makes him one of the highest paid assistant coaches in college football. It is believed Southern Miss will offer its new head coach a financial package of $700,000.

Fedora said Wednesday he has a "great job" at OSU, but added he aspires to run his own program.

"It's all about fit," Fedora said. "It has to be a good fit for me, and it has to be a good fit for the university."

I wish they wouldn't even say stuff like that. It just sounds disingenuous. Makes him sound slippery like Les Miles.

I think "no comment" would probably be the best thing to say.

I'm with you Verb. Wish they wouldn't say anything at all.

The article says he declined comment about the job and then made that statement. He said exactly what he needs to say.
