STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley enjoys a stern halftime speech from head coach Kurt Budke.
And after a sloppy first half, the third-year coach was happy to oblige.
"I love it when he yells at us, it gets me pumped," said the sophomore point guard who poured in a team-high 22 points to lead No. 25 OSU to an 85-39 romp over Wichita State Tuesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
"We weren't very focused out of warm-ups," she said. "He told us we had better pull it together. I didn't want to disappoint him."
Riley was 8-for-13 from the field with two 3-pointers and 4-of-6 at the free- throw line to record her 18th consecutive game in double figures, dating back to last season.
OSU started just 1-of-8 from the field but heated up quickly behind seven straight from Riley that keyed a 22-5 run.
The Cowgirls never looked back.
"This is what we envisioned with Andrea," Budke said. "It was all part of the plan and she's a difference-maker."
A crowd of 1,414 saw the Cowgirls improve to 8-0, equaling last year's start and two shy of the school record of 10 consecutive wins to start the 1995-96 season.
But it was the team's first crack into the Top 25 in 11 years that Riley and freshman Kristin Hernandez talked about.
"It's an honor, but we want more," Riley said. "Being ranked was one of our goals. Coach Budke came in to practice (Monday) all smiles.
"We knew something was up."
Said Hernandez, "It's special. It felt like we made a 10-team jump from 26 (last week) to 25 this week."
Budke praised the team's efforts.
"It feels good," he said. "I've always said from (No.) 15 to 55, anybody can beat anybody.
"We've been fairly dominant with who we've played. We've earned it. But I've been in this business a long time. It's the poll I like."
The Cowgirls held WSU (4-4) to 26 percent field goal shooting, resulting in its worst defeat since 1980 (111-57 versus Central Missouri State).
Yet, Budke saw room for improvement, particularly in the first half when OSU shot 33 percent from the field (10-of-30).
"I wasn't very happy," he said. "I didn't think we brought focus to the game. We were sloppy at times."
Former Tulsa Union star Kiki Stephens led Wichita State with 12 points.
OSU countered with 17 from Danielle Green and 12 from Hernandez.
The Cowgirls got 31 points from its bench, including nine from true freshman Megan Byford.
Shauntee Smith recorded a game-high 10 rebounds, five on each end.
Green added nine boards, four assists and two steals.
