OSU begins process of finding next coach

STILLWATER -- Mike Holder became Oklahoma State's athletic director during the fall of 2005, and now he begins the process of making his first significant coaching hire.

He is not sure whether OSU will assemble a search committee, but Holder undoubtedly will be primarily responsible for identifying the Cowboys' next head basketball coach. After two seasons on the job, Sean Sutton resigned on Tuesday.

Holder says he hasn't come up with a list of candidates.

"We haven't talked to anyone yet," he said. "I haven't talked to any coaches. I haven't talked to any athletic directors. I haven't talked to any agents. I haven't talked to any search firms.

"We will begin a national search. I haven't done this before. I'm probably going to get a lot of lessons."

OSU President Burns Hargis will be asked to examine the credentials of the candidates, but apparently won't be heavily in volved in the search.

"I'm going to rely on Mike," Hargis said.

As salaries have steadily and dramatically increased for football coaches, so they have for basketball coaches. Texas' Rick Barnes makes $2 million. Last week, Oklahoma's Jeff Capel was given a raise to $1.05 million. Kentucky's Billy Gillispie makes $2.3 million. Kansas' Bill Self and Tennessee's Bruce Pearl each make $1.3 million.

OSU officials might have no choice but to pay their next coach more money than has ever been commanded by a Cowboy basketball coach. Sean Sutton was paid $750,000 this season. During the 2005-06 season, his final season with the Cowboys, Eddie Sutton made $916,325.

If this is really true then it pisses me off even more. With the many jobs open right now I would certainly hope that he would give significant thought to his second, third, and fourth move before making the first. I'm sure this is BS, but if it's not that is not a good sign.
