Cowgirls rout Shockers by 46; move to 8-0
Jacob Longan - NewsPress
It took the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team more than a decade to return to the Associated Press’ Top 25.
Between a scheduling quirk and a dominating win Tuesday, the No. 25 Cowgirls are likely to stay in the rankings for at least the next few weeks.
OSU, unranked since 1996, thumped Wichita State, 85-39, in front of 1,414 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena to improve to 8-0 for the second straight year.
The Cowgirls could have the third 9-0 start in school history if they win at TCU, but that won’t be until Dec. 18.
That they would be taking their win streak to Fort Worth was in little doubt Tuesday, as the Shockers (4-4) led for just 17 seconds.
But OSU coach Kurt Budke was still disappointed that his team’s halftime advantage was 36-16.
“We were just talking about the Christmas party,” Budke jokingly said about his halftime speech. “My job as a head coach is to make sure they play the way they need to play. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I went in there and said, ‘Hey, everything is OK and that was OK. It was just a bad half. Come out the second half and play better.’”
Sophomore point guard Andrea Riley, who led all scorers with 22 points, said it fired her up when Budke said “if we didn’t have a better second half, something bad would happen.
“I love when he yells at us and be mad and looking all fierce and stuff,” Riley said. “That’s like motivation. That gets me pumped up.”
The speech obviously worked for the team, which Budke said is typical of his club.
The Cowgirls made 10-of-30 shots in the first half and 15-of-26 after the break. They had nine of their 12 assists after the break and turned a 24-21 rebounding edge into a 48-35 tally.
Senior guard Danielle Green was just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine assists and added a team-high four assists while freshman guard Kristin Hernandez added 12 points off the bench.
“I like coming off the bench,” Hernandez said. “It’s humbling to be coming off so quick as a freshman. I feel like I can help the team better coming off the bench because it helps me to watch.
“I don’t know the system the whole way so I like to watch the starting five. It gives me a better feel.”
For the Shockers, forward Kiki Stephens — a Tulsa Union product — scored a team-high 12 points.

Its hard to drive from OKC and see every football game, every mens basketball game, and then find the time to drive up for womens as well. We have really thought about buying two season tickets, and coming up for a half dozen big 12 games....probably won't buy the season tickets, but will try to make the 6 games or so.
I wish they played more games before the mens. Women's at 3pm, men at 7pm. Enough time to get everyone out before taking tickets for the guys. I know it would be a nightmare probably, but would help us see them more.
