Surge in game day alcohol offenses addressed starting Saturday

The game day experience at Oklahoma State University could be changing drastically as administrators tackle the growing issue of students over-consuming alcohol.

At the four home games this year, there have been 101 arrests. Students comprised 75 of those arrests, and every arrest was alcohol related, said Mike Robinson, OSU police chief.

Robinson said the alcohol problem is the worst he has seen in his eight years with the department. Campus buildings were vandalized last year, and bathrooms inside Boone Pickens Stadium were damaged this year. For some students and alumni, the game day experience just stinks. There have been 20 reported incidents in which people were vomited on.

"It's a widespread problem on campus," Robinson said. "I think everyone's aware of the fact that there's potential there to have a tragic situation occur."

A recent meeting of OSU's top officials yielded immediate changes, which will be incorporated for the remaining three home games.

The following changes take effect this Saturday:

• Fans caught with alcohol within Boone Pickens Stadium will be kicked out instead of being asked to dump out their alcohol.

• Contact information for any student violators will be sent to Student Affairs to begin a student conduct proceeding.

• More officers will be assigned to areas of highest suspected alcohol-related offenses, such as minor in possession and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

• Kick-off times changed to 2 p.m. if the game is not televised.

I saw that this morning. On the link you provided, you can see a map of "official" places you can drink 3.2 beer. I didn't realize they had special areas for drinking. And I thought they pretty much just looked the other way on game days. I bet this doesn't affect most people at all, except for the ones who drink way too much.

Hopefully, it's aimed at the people who act like jerks, and everybody else will be left alone.

Sounds like it's mostly the students screwing up (mostly)

but my gosh, if your wasted and you know it's coming, don't sit in your seat until you puke on the person in front of you... get your butt up and out of there... sheesh

We had a guy that sat down in front of us 2nd quarter of the A&M game. Could barely sit up right, dropped his phone and when he bent down to pick it up he fell head first 2 rows down. When he finally was able to sit up, he was bleeding from the head. I got up at half to get a coke and saw security and ems on the way to that section. I went up and sat by JD and Jack in their section to get away from him.

Aye gawd Woodrow, we policed our own back in the 70's; no tolerance for puking pansies. Another generation of nimrod ninnies.

I sit in 224 by the entrance tunnel, which divides the student section from regular seating, and have seen students pulled out ever game and have seen at least 10 people arrested. It really seems to be getting out of hand so I am glad they are doing something about it. During the National Anthem at the Troy game a student puke in his hat while to song was still playing; he puke d in to his hat and when the song was over put his hat back on. I got security to help him and when they approached him he said he was fine, even with vomit running down his face.

+1

Next thing you know, they will throw flags for a player hitting someone too hard.

Either don't drink or learn to hold your liquor. Good grief.

yeah, I remember a game back in 77 where we made up a barrel of "Cowboy Koolaid" before one game -- (orange koolaid and everclear mixed with bags of ice in a 10 gallon trash can).

My room mate was feeling it and left at halftime, as he should have, the problem was we found him passed out in the hedges at the NE end of the stadium and had to help him back home.... !

But dang it, he didn't puke on anybody and he didn't annoy anybody around us.

We snuck in pints of liquor in our boots when I was there from '78 to '82, but none of us puked on our neighbors at the game. That's the problem with kids now...more popular to drink till you puke then to just get a nice drunk.

This is probably less of a problem for early games like this one. The early start many times will result in a shorter pre-party or tail-gate.

If they did this at an OU game there would only be pre-teen kids allowed in the stands.

Four home games means how many people? I'm going to go real low and say 160k. 101 arrests out of that number is actually pretty low I'd think.

Were the cops cracking down on the drunks today?
