University of Oklahoma men's basketball coach Jeff Capel has agreed to a raise and a contract extension that will keep him with the Sooners next season, according to sources.
Late in the basketball season, South Carolina media outlets reported that Capel was the leading candidate to become the next coach at that school. However, the raise and contract extension at OU will likely rule out the possibility that Capel would leave for another job, according to sources.
The length of his new contract and his new salary is unknown, but he has agreed to a deal that must be approved by the school's regents. OU officials were unavailable for comment, but the university is expected to release details of Capel's pending agreement either Thursday or Friday. Capel was given a $100,000 raise last summer and makes $750,000 a year. He already was under contract through June 30, 2012.
Last week at OU's NCAA regional, Capel was asked by the World what his response would be if South Carolina was interested. He replied: "Well, hopefully, it doesn't get to that. Hopefully, we can work something out here at Oklahoma. This is where I want to be. This is where I've wanted to be. It's the reason I left VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) to come here. So right there, that's my answer. This is where I want to be."
OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said last week that he would be "proactive" in keeping Capel as OU's coach.
OU had a 23-12 record this season and won a first-round game against St. Joseph's in the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners were eliminated by Louisville in the second round.
