Sources: OU's Jeff Capel agrees to raise, contract extension

University of Oklahoma men's basketball coach Jeff Capel has agreed to a raise and a contract extension that will keep him with the Sooners next season, according to sources.

Late in the basketball season, South Carolina media outlets reported that Capel was the leading candidate to become the next coach at that school. However, the raise and contract extension at OU will likely rule out the possibility that Capel would leave for another job, according to sources.

The length of his new contract and his new salary is unknown, but he has agreed to a deal that must be approved by the school's regents. OU officials were unavailable for comment, but the university is expected to release details of Capel's pending agreement either Thursday or Friday. Capel was given a $100,000 raise last summer and makes $750,000 a year. He already was under contract through June 30, 2012.

Last week at OU's NCAA regional, Capel was asked by the World what his response would be if South Carolina was interested. He replied: "Well, hopefully, it doesn't get to that. Hopefully, we can work something out here at Oklahoma. This is where I want to be. This is where I've wanted to be. It's the reason I left VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) to come here. So right there, that's my answer. This is where I want to be."

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said last week that he would be "proactive" in keeping Capel as OU's coach.

OU had a 23-12 record this season and won a first-round game against St. Joseph's in the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners were eliminated by Louisville in the second round.

Nice to see that his AD could find time for him.

Our ladies didn't leave until today and got back a day before OU did and they were even able to put a contract together instead of just having a meeting. Holder's handling of this situation is embarrassing.

I agree with Wicker on this one, Holder needs to $hit or get off the pot,one way or another. Other schools are using this against us in recruiting. Give Sean the vote, and say he'll be back for sure, or do the oust and say a serch will begin after all teams are done playing, I dunno, but yes MH needs to step up and do something.

Since the announcement in January that the South Carolina coach was to retire, Capel's name had been in the forefront of the discussion as the potential SC coach. The fact that OU would need to make a new offer, note the irony-he was under contract, was well known.

The OU offer matched the offer from SC, therefore, from Capel's perspective it made no sense to change. Capel will always be available for a name program in the ACC or SEC. I am somewhat surprised his name has not come up for the LSU position. He will leave, but he will leave for a program that will allow him to be successful. In the SEC, he would need to overcome Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee in the East just to be in the game. Vanderbilt has been more than decent and Georgia should be doing better with their availability of talent than they have. In South Carolina itself, SC is second fiddle to Clemson, so while there was a potential offer, it would have a been a leap of faith to believe Capel would have taken that job. Just standby though and see what happens when a real opportunity presents itself.

Regarding the money, BB salaries have been escalating in the last few years. Our program can easily match salary with OU's, that is not an issue.

While many are standing around awaiting announcements, Tramel etc., I'm not expecting anything coming from Holder. If there is an announcement, it would mean Sean is gone. Sean has a contract, it is in place for the next 3 years.

Let's approcah this from Holder's perspective. You have an underperforming sport with a coach with a multiple year contract. Do you pander to the media and hold a press conference? Do that one time and they will be on you constantly for every situation. Take the opposite side of this, you hold a conference and announce Sean is returning, (he already was based on the 3 year contract) and the next question is 'If you support him why not give him an extension?'

I see a no win position for Holder to pander to the media. The only reason to for a press conference is either to announce the firing of a coach or a contract extension.

That's about as lame as I have ever seen. I don't see any "pandering" to the media on Holder's part if he was to express some support of his coach - a coach who is doing a damn good job with what he has to work with, by the way - but the LACK OF expressed support of his Basketball coach shows a great deal of pandering to Holder's own ego. Both are coaches, and loads of self-confidence and ego's are a natural part of the equation, but this just smacks of "Yeah, I'll show HIM who's running the show"....:vomit-smiley-001: We're all tired of it, and my respect for Holder diminishes by the day that he allows this whole charade to continue.

CC, Your solution is to hold a press conference announce support for Sean, and then answer no, OSU will not extend Sean's current contract at this time?

DNA, Capel was offered more money at USC than at OU...it was a 7 year deal, worth $1.3 million per year (whereas OU was a 6-year extension worth $1.05 million a year)...also, his name hasn't come up for the LSU job because he reportedly turned down interview offers from the Bayou Bengals...

No, OSUDNA... that is not what he is saying...

What he is saying is, as an AD you have to back up your coaches and you have to stop any action(s) that rob the program or the players/recruiters attention from the program....

The way Holder is handling the situation not only undermines Sean but the program as well.
