Willie Nelson thinks you should know a thing or two about some cows. The country crooner is joining in on a campaign along with the Animal Legal Defense Fund to raise awareness about cruel-and illegal-living conditions for calves raised to produce milk for dairy products. Moo! Boo!
Specifically, they are targeting Land O'Lakes and Challenge Dairy to get them to stop using milk from calves that come from California's Mendes Calf Ranch - which employs an intensive confinement practice (keeping calves in cramped, filthy crates - sometimes without room to turn around or lie down) and is the subject of a lawsuit brought by the ALDF.

If anyone is interested in how the food industry works and how unnatural the methods are (yes, sometimes includin organic farms) read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. It is really interesting, and disturbingly eye opening.

They are cattle.
They don't exactly live a glamorous life.
What about those cruising around every pasture in Oklahoma with "excrement" all over their roasts? Should their owners be sued for custody of those animals because they aren't kept clean?
I'm all about humane treatment, but it's a pretty slippery slope, and should be tread upon carefully. I don't know much about the ALDF but someone here has had some personal experience with an animal rights group, and they can be pretty zealous.

I had the "experience" with PETA during a horse rescue. It was a pain in the bum for sure, but i saved the horse and her foal. I don't know if this group is like PETA or not.
We have cattle. Black Angus. I would never treat our calves like that.

While I don't purport to know much about the dairy cattle business, I did know a gal that was raised on a dairy farm, and for some reason I seem to remember her saying that all calves were immediately taken off the momma cow, at least for a time, and it didn't have to do with the baby drinking all the milk.
I don't know a damn thing about the dairy business, but I love Land-o-Lakes butter.:)

Calves should not be raised for their milk.
They should be coddled and treated well and kept soft and raised for veal.

Since it is impossible for calves to give milk, I am a very confused farm boy. Did they say "calves"? If so, it is hilarious.

Calves that are raised to produce milk.
BUT..
on the link supplied, it states:
Land O’Lakes and Challenge Dairy are two of the dairy producers who use milk from calves confined at Mendes. It’s time to let them know that this practice is unnecessary — and unacceptable.
