View Full Version : A little speculation...

With Holders comment last night I would have to say that is seems a decent chance that Sean is gone. For those that missed it here is Holders comment (when asked about Seans future at OSU):
"That will be dealt with in due time. He's under contract. He's got three years left on it. So I'll leave it at that, for today."
To me there is no reason to say the last part unless you are just waiting to fire him. So why wait? I would say the reason is that you have not got his replacement in place yet. So why would that be? Most likely it is cause that replacement is still involved with his team in the NCAA tourney. So with this line of speculation we can say that Holder is trying to get one of the 16 coaches left in the tourney.
So lets look at that list:
UNC - Roy Williams
Wash St - Tony Bennett
Louiseville - Rick Pitino
Tennesee - Bruce Pearl
Kansas - Bill Self
Villanova - Jay Wright
Wisconsin - Bo Ryan
Davidson - Bob McKillop
Memphis - John Calipari
Mich St - Tom Izzo
Stanford - Trent Johnson
Texas - Rick Barnes
UCLA - Ben Howland
W Kent - Darrin Horn
Xavier - Sean Miller
W Virg - Bob Huggins
So looking at that list we should be able to eliminate some obvious ones that won't happen:
Rick Barnes, Roy Williams, Tom Izzo, Bob Huggins.
After that there are the not very likely guys (with my guess at to why they are in this category):
Ben Howland (to high profile a job), John Calipari (to high profile a coach, IMHO), Rick Pitino (to high profile a coach, IMHO), Bruce Pearl (don't feel he will leave Tenn for any job but the really big ones), Darrub Horn (not right candidate), Bob McKillop (not right candidate).
So that leaves us with:
Tony Bennett, Bill Self, Jay Wright, Bo Ryan, Trent Johnson, Sean Miller.
As the title says this is just speculation but it is interesting when you dig a little. What are everyone elses thoughts....

I would put Self in the Won't Happen list. Actually, the one's you list as not the right candidate are the right candidates. :ousucksnana:

I'm guessing a 99.9% chance that Sutton is coaching the team next season.
Holder's comments did not say or imply anything, either way.
It was simply a very poorly worded response.

The only 99.9 percent odd i'm willing to bet is that if he is back next year he better get his crap together and get to coaching this team to something other than a one and done in the NIT, or it will get really ugly.

Sean Miller just signed a huge extension thru the 2016 season. He was personally groomed by Thad Matta to take the job. His only other small jobs have been NCState, Pitt, Miami (O) and Wisc. He's not coming to Oklahoma.
Jay Wright is from Bucknell. He was brought to Nova by Rollie Massimino originally and recommended by Rollie for the head job. He is having 10 top recruiting and Elite Eight years there, a place that has won a title since most of us were born; he isn't coming here.
Bo Ryan has been in Wisc in some form or another since 1977. He's not coming here.
Tony Bennett took over WSU from his dad. I don't see him coming here at all.
Darrin Horn grad'd from WKU.
Bob McKillop has been at Davidson since 1989.
Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Tom Izzo, Rick Barnes, Ben Howland, Bob Huggins are all completely out.
IMO, Self shouldn't even be discussed, he will never leave.
That leaves you with Pearl and Johnson.
Both have jobs that can be argued are better jobs TODAY than OSU. Being #1 in the SEC and #2 in the P10 ain't too shabby.
Therefore by default I see no one on your list viable for the job.
What NIT teams are still alive?

Given that very good analysis of the apparent candidates, if we don't a have a commitment in hand on a great hire then I don't think there is any benefit in letting go of Sean.
We may end up putting ourselves in a much worse spot than we are in now if they aren't careful.

Hey, I know a team that is still alive who's coach not only orchestrated one of the biggest NCAA turn arounds ever, but also has them in only their 2nd Sweet 16 and best records ever. Incidentally, their assistant just turned down a HC job to stay; maybe promised the job when we hire the HC?

Interesting point for discussion: Can a women's coach be successful in the men's game? i.e. are the games too different?

That would be an unprecdented move, for sure. I do seem to remember him originally wanting to coach men's BB, but fell into women's BB coaching. Maybe I'm just imagining that, but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.

I want Sean to get another year but I agree that things will get ugly if we don't make to the NCAA tournament next year and probably win at least one game. We may need to win two to prove that things are going in the right direction. Anything short of that will be considered a disaster.

I think Sean is a great guy and bleeds the orange as much as any of our other coaches. I just can't see things turning around for him.
I don't claim to know what's going on between Sean and the players. But's it's painfully obvious to me that for most of the season, Sean couldn't get the players to play hard for him. In fact I will go one better and say that he couldn't get the players to respect him. Who know's if there's something going on behind the scenes to explain that or if it is simply that Sean is not cut out for the HC job. Whatever the case, I don't see it getting better. Sure we had a nice run towards the end, only to end things on another sour note.
Everyone wants to point to the fact that he has had to dismiss several players during the last couple of years and has had that to overcome. Need I point out the obvious, that many student athletes playing college basketball are not angels. Many have huge egos and have to have their butts kicked on a daily basis. Good coaches do this routinely. If the coach cannot handle such what I would call personnel problems on his team, he's in the wrong line of business.
I am not anti-Sean, but pro-oSu. I think MH owes it to the fans and boosters to make a change, even if it means losing someone who bleeds orange profusely.

Scott would NEVER come in after Sean was forced out. Too much pride as a family.

Welcome to the board, now I'm going to have to blow the foul whistle on those comments... WOW. Just Wow. It hurts my Cowboy heart just to read such misguided and misrepresented comments.
I don't know what team you were watching or whom you were speaking with, but it doesn't sound like you watched the 2007 Cowboy basketball season.
Didn't play hard? Didn't respect him? You can't see it getting better?
You are talking about the Men's team, right?
Beating Kansas is not "playing hard"? Playing UT to the wire in every game is not "playing hard"? If there is one thing that I will adamently say about this Cowboy season, it is that the team ALWAYS played hard, they never gave up, and Sutton did a fantastic job of keeping their heads up and motivated even after a terrible start through OOC and into the Big12.
These kids played harder down the stretch as they got better and better. I honestly cannot believe that you made those comments, or that you actually believe them. Almost every interview with any and all players, they all endorsed Sutton, and credited him with getting them prepared and keeping them motivated. Even the biased DO was reporting this stuff.
Further, almost all of the dismissed players were for violations of team rules, not for big egos. I'm not even certain that your comments are about the OSU Cowboys. Only one guy had a big ego, and his mom boxed his ears and told him to listen to the coach, and that was the last team, not this team. Nobody on this team acted that way, certainly not in the 2nd half of this season.
I understand that you have strong feelings about the Cowboys, we all do, but come on, there is no documented basis for most of the stuff that you're spouting there.
Like I said, welcome, but holy moley, try to be at least a little factual in your statements. That stuff sounds to me more like emotional knee-jerk reactions.
