Report: TCU, Sutton meet about job

Oral Roberts basketball coach Scott Sutton met with Texas Christian University officials about the school's vacant head-coaching position Tuesday and is considered a top candidate for the job, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported on its Web site, quoting "a source with knowledge of the situation."

TCU officials also met Tuesday with former University of Tulsa head coach Buzz Peterson, also a top candidate, according to the Star-Telegram.

Sutton, who has guided the Golden Eagles to a 168-111 record in nine seasons and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, did not return a call to his cell phone.

ORU athletic director Mike Carter, reached by phone, said "we're not going to comment on anything," when asked if TCU officials had sought permission to talk to Sutton.

TCU athletic director Danny Morrison would not comment on the search and said he does not have a defined timeline for hiring a coach, the Star-Telegram said.

"We're continuing to work through the process. We're excited about the interest in this position," Morrison said.

It has been estimated that Sutton would, at the very least, double his ORU salary, believed to be in the $175,000-$200,000 range, with a jump to the higher-prestige Mountain West Conference. Sutton turned down a similar move to become head coach at Wichita State last year.

Eagles assistant coach Tom Hankins stood in for Sutton during the head coach's weekly radio call-in show Tuesday night.

According to the Star-Telegram, Sutton was not in contact with TCU officials until after the Eagles' 82-63 first-round NCAA loss to Pittsburgh last Thursday.

Two of Sutton's assistants have worked at TCU:

Conley Phipps worked under former head coach Billy Tubbs for two years (1997-99) before moving to join Sutton's new ORU staff in 1999.

First-year ORU assistant Chris Crutchfield spent two years (2005-07) on Neil Dougherty's staff.

Dougherty was relieved of his duties last week after guiding the Horned Frogs to a third straight losing season. He was 75-108 in six years.

I don't; hold out for a BCS Conf job! Ore State or Northwestern or something like that.
