IN 1999, TEXAS A&M was the defending Big 12 football champion. During a 14-year period that began in 1985, the Aggies had 11 seasons of at least nine victories and were the most accomplished program in Texas.

In 1999, Oklahoma State fans could only dream of seeing the Cowboys at a comparable level.

OSU's ultimate goal, obviously, is to consistently challenge Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12 South, but the more immediate goal of catching A&M has been accomplished. Actually, in terms of current relevance and achievement, it could be argued that both OSU and Texas Tech have passed the Aggies.

When the Cowboys and A&M collide in Thursday's Big 12 opener at Boone Pickens Stadium, OSU bids for its third consecutive victory in the series. In the last eight OSU-A&M meetings, each team won four times.

Texas A&M has a larger stadium and fan base. A&M has two indoor practice facilities. OSU has none. Otherwise, the Cowboys have advantages:

Since the start of the 2002 season, OSU has an overall record of 63-41 with seven bowl appearances. A&M is 51-50 with four bowls.

During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, OSU had an AP Top 25 national ranking in 22 games. During the entire 2000-09 decade, the Aggies were ranked in 28 games.

During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, 19 Cowboy games were televised. A&M had 14 exposures. OSU was televised six times on ABC. The Aggies had two ABC games.

In 2006-09, Texas A&M was 6-6 against Big 12 North opponents. OSU was 10-2.

"I think we're recruiting as well as (the Aggies) are now," Cowboy coach Mike Gundy said, "and I think we've had as much success on the field."

In 1989-97, as both OU and Texas were struggling, A&M clearly was the dominant force in the recruiting of Texas high school football talent. The Aggies' recruiting status was diminished first by the rise of Bob Stoops' Sooners and Mack Brown's Longhorns, and more recently by Gundy's Cowboys.

These are among the Texans who reportedly were high-priority A&M recruits but wound up signing with Oklahoma State: Bobby Reid, Perrish Cox, Russell Okung, Keith Toston, Dez Bryant, Hubert Anyiam, Markelle Martin and Justin Gilbert.

ESPN's Thursday audience will see an OSU team ranked No. 1 nationally in total offense, No. 2 in passing yards and No. 2 in scoring.

The game will be played in Boone Pickens Stadium, transformed by a $283 million renovation into a state-of-the-art football venue.

It's an opportunity for OSU to impress the college football nation - and to remind the Aggies that they not only have formidable rivals in Norman, Austin and Lubbock, but in Stillwater, as well.

I'll post this over here too. A&M had to cheat like crazy to have success in a watered-down conference riddled with probation. Their bowl record from 86 to 94 was 3-5...mediocre.
