DES MOINES, Iowa -- With Oklahoma State having eliminated Florida State in the second round of the Women's NCAA Tournament, a daunting Sweet Sixteen challenge awaits the Cowgirls.
On Saturday at the New Orleans Arena, only a 70-mile drive from the LSU campus, the third-seeded Cowgirls face the second-seeded LSU Tigers.
"We don't want to go there just to go there," Cowgirl guard Andrea Riley said. "We want the Elite Eight and the Final Four. It's very motivating for people to say that we're the underdog. We want to show people that we can play with anybody in the country."
On Monday, on the Tigers' home floor in Baton Rouge, La., LSU (29-5) defeated seventh-seeded Marist 68-49. Tiger center Sylvia Fowles, a 6-foot-6 senior, recorded the 84th double-double of her career (18 point, 13 rebounds). In the process, she became the Southeastern Conference's career leader in rebounds.
LSU is attempting to make a fifth consecutive Final Four appearance.
"If you can go win at Tennessee (by 16 points, as LSU did on Feb. 14), you've got a legitimate chance to win it all," OSU coach Kurt Budke said. "They've got one of the greatest players in the country in Sylvia Fowles, and they've got (eight) seniors. We'll do what we've done all season long -- go down there and give it our best."
The NCAA has not yet determined the start time for Saturday's game.
