THANKS TO local urging, national begging, and global pleading, it is time for one of the most popular bits in journalism, a Picks Production of a Bob Stoops press conference.
"OK, first question."
"Coach, how's your new mansion coming?"
"It's going up in a big way."
"Bob, talk about how the momentum from that the national championship game in 2001 will help Saturday against the Seminoles."
"Well, it sure can't hurt."
"Coach, why don't you think that a SEC-loving national media realizes that you weren't trying against Utah State and its NFL-type quarterback, and dropped us all the way to 10th?"
"They were probably busy with something else."
"Thanks for that text message about the 35-star recruit."
"You're welcome, next question."
"Coach, isn't it a fact that you showed only five to six percent of your offense in the opener?"
"Probably a little more than that."
"Bob, why do some nay-sayers have such a difficult time realizing that winning a bowl championship is more important than winning a regular season game like Texas?"
"You'll have to ask them. Let's go to the new reporter at the back of the room."
"Coach, isn't it true that Florida State has been lousy for a long, long time and that its quarterback is lumbering and that only OU people act like it is a top 15 team?"
"See you next week."
The Picks
Tonight
Minnesota at New Orleans (-5): Favre: This is getting fictional, it's like a dad padding-up with his 20-year old sons and taking them to school out back.
Will Peterson fumble his helmet?
NO by 7.
Saturday
Florida State at OU (-8½): See final press conference question for a true analysis of the third best team in Florida.
This one is the second-most important game in the Stoops era, after the first Seminole game - a loss here, and an actual grumble from a suite might be heard.
The OU secondary once more looks lost in translation.
OU by 7.
Troy at Oklahoma State (-11): If Coach Pickens isn't running this team, why does he keep having press conferences?
Troy is three times better than Washout State, but then, you know the rest of the story, who isn't?
This is one of the few games not on TV; it's pistols squeaking time on radio.
Troy is from Alabama - low point spread suggests very competitive game.
OSU by 13.
Bowling Green at Tulsa (-10): Each win/loss for TU translates into plus/minus fans in the stands.
Watts has voltage.
If you're not in solid defensive position in the end zone on a game-ender, hack him, it's a 15-yard penalty.
TU's D is frighteningly thin.
TU by 13.
Georgia Tech (-13) at Kansas: Now we know why Nebraska didn't hire the new KU coach.
Tech by 14.
Georgia at South Carolina (-2½): The old ball putter has been a major minor presence at South Carolina - needs to start driving players, not range balls.
Home team by 3.
Iowa State at Iowa (-13½): Uncivil war, as Big Ten team embarrasses overrated league.
Iowa by 14.
Michigan at Notre Dame (-4): ND not quite good enough for automatic disapproval.
ND by 3.
BYU at Air Force (even): Football is now a major part of the scenery in Idaho, Utah.
AF by 2.
Miami at Ohio State (-9½): Rare admission, Big Ten is better than we thought.
State by 11.
Penn State at Alabama (-12): JoPa recruits the great-great grandparents of stars like nobody's business.
Alabama by 14.
Sunday
Green Bay (-3) at the Eagles: Philly boo-birds stretching their limbs, loosening up.
Visitors by 2.
Arizona (-4) at St. Louis: We get Sam's first game on TV.
Perfect opener for rookie quarterback at home.
St. Louis by 3.
Dallas (-4½) Washington: Sports teams in DC mirror the politicos, spend a ton, talk a good game.
Now that Romo has his ball cap on straight, let's hope his head will follow.
Dallas by 3.
Monday
Baltimore at the Jets (-2): First of Monday night doubleheader.
Bleeping Jets inoffensive.
Home team by 3.
San Diego (-5) at Kansas City: Will chief Chief weapons again be penalties?
SD by 1.
