Surprising even himself, Markelle Martin's heavy hitting took a toll on Washington State — and his own helmet.
Martin had to replace his face mask at halftime Saturday night, following a first half that saw him punishing Cougars. During one four-play stretch, Martin delivered big sticks to Wazzu players for two tackles and a pass breakup.
"I'm just trying to set a tone," Martin said. "I want us to be an aggressive, hard-hitting defense."
Still, Martin said he'd never broken a face mask before. And didn't know he'd done so this time.
"I had no idea," he said. "But once I got around to looking at it, it was bent up pretty good."
