Is anyone using Microsoft Security Essentials for their anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. system? If so, for how long have you used it and have you had any problems? I understand that it's provided free by Microsoft and is as good as McAfee or Norton but I would like to hear this from a few experienced users.

Yessir, I've been using it for several months and put it on my parents' computers. I like it. OSU has recently moved from McAfee to MS Forefront and Security Essentials (they are very similar...but the Forefront client can be managed and S.E. cannot).
I used to use AVG at home. It's a good (free) product, but I didn't like the popups/advertisements to upgrade to their pro versions.
I also suggest using something like malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org) for additional malware/spyware protection. It isn't passive like a virus program; you have to specifically run it when you want to check. It's also free.
Ive been using it for about 6 months, no issues at all. I would highly suggest having malwarebytes on top of ANY anti virus.

I'll third the malwarebytes statement. If you don't have it....GET IT.
A little while back I got hit with a nasty little trojan virus that even slipped through my normal virus protection. I noticed the computer was acting funny so I ran Malwarebytes and it nailed that sucker dead.
If you don't have it....get it.

+1 on Mal. The last dose of clap came from Rivals and Mal. got it all. Silly question, but why would a "free" download do what wasn't caught by the "pay" one?

One voice says "you get what you pay for" while the marketing voice says "The price should be whatever the market will bare". Do you feel born or baren?
I hate to leave myself that wide open for the English Nazis.
Common sense says you should have a primary care Doctor and a completely seperate Clap Doctor so the primary care Doctor doesn't know what a slease bag you are. Free Mal gets the job done like the Clap Doctor while Pay Mal is like "Bend over" from the Primary Care Doctor.

That's the crazy thing about the tech world. When it comes to software you don't always get what you pay for. There is a very big movement of software developers going to shareware (aka free software).
