STILLWATER – Jamie Blatnik, one of Oklahoma State's three player representatives at last week's Big 12 Media Days, has been cited for felony aggravated assault and battery following an alleged fight with a former teammate inside a Stillwater bar.

OSU defensive end Jamie Blatnik cited for assault and battery According to a news release issued by the Stillwater Police Department, witnesses told officers that Blatnik fought with former Cowboy Stephen Denning inside J.R. Murphy's, a club located at 306 S Washington, starting the scuffle by striking Denning in the face with a beer bottle.

Blatnik, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound junior, is projected as a starting defensive end after totaling 28 tackles as a part-time starter a year ago. He was chosen to join quarterback Brandon Weeden and linebacker Orie Lemon in representing the Cowboys at the Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday in Irving, Texas.

OSU coach Mike Gundy was unavailable for comment late Sunday night.

Denning, a former offensive lineman who completed his eligibility in 2008 and graduated this year, was taken by police officers to the hospital, where he was treated for a fractured orbital socket. In addition, he required several stitches to his left upper eyelid and upper cheekbone.

In the release, officers reported that Denning was “bleeding profusely” from a cut on his left eye.

Officers were notified of the fight and called to the club at 1:17 a.m. Saturday morning. According to the release, officers escorted Blatnik and Denning outside. As officers were interviewing Denning, he saw Blatnik and forced his way through several officers in an attempt to continue the fight. As a result, officers used a Taser to subdue Denning.

Denning was cited with a misdemeanor complaint of assault.

Several witnesses came forward and identified Blatnik as the instigator in the fight, according to the release. Witnesses did not suggest what started the fight.

He needs to be removed from the team. If he beats the rap he can rejoin. But this should be an easy one for Gundy, if you get charged with a felony you are gone.

I can understand two guys getting into a fistfight, but when you start picking up weapons, then the penalty has to be a lot tougher.

If the eye-witness reports are accurate that Jamie started the physical conflict by striking Denning with a bottle, then I would think that the courts will settle the matter and Gundy won't need to make a decision other then "suspened until resolved".

This whole thing could get dropped, who knows.

Other witnesses are claiming that Denning grabbed Blatnik by the throat first and after that is when the bottle was thrown. I will wait to judge since we don't know what is accurate yet...

Exactly.

If the strongest guy in Stillwater grabs you by the throat, then that might be considered cause to feel that your life is in danger and you defend yourself anyway possible.

Way to early, and not any clear information to make any decisions or for any fans to jump to any conclusions.

This is from the Blitz's:

OKBlitz.com Update: A source tells OKBlitz.com Sports Director John Holcomb that Jamie Blatnick and Stephen Denning have "already made up" and that Denning doesn't want Blatnick to face severe consequences.

Is this in the hands of the DA now, or is it Denning's decision on whether to press charges or not??

This reminds me of when Dusty pounded his buddy into the ground and we were all calling for his head.

the newspaper today said they had reconciled and wanted the charges to go away, but not that the police are involved, it won't be that easy... maybe reduced charges for both.

So you're saying that Jamie will be a team captain next year? :D

Hope so Jonno...because we need some 'tude' on the team this year. Maybe the other teams will know we come with beer bottles and are ready to use 'em!:action-smiley-033::headbang::party-smiley-018::stupe:

I can remember several fights involving football players in bars while I was at OSU. Usually it was a football player vs. a local, affectionally labeled a "Goat Roper" by the other college students.~. Another time it was a football player vs. a wrestler. Both times beer bottles were involved. However, after a minute or two of beating the two were seperated by friends and the involved kind of disappeared or were escorted away by friends. This probably would have happened if the police didn't come by on a routine patrol. Blatnik was probably unlucky in this regard.

Derning would have needed some hospital time but I'll bet the Stillwater hospitals see this every week-end. Someone will come in after a bar beating and require stiches or bone fixing.

With the non-guilty plea and the lack of Derning support, Blatnik will probably plea bargin to some lesser, misdemeamor charge and stay on the team. Just my guess. I'm not a judge or a lawyer but I did have a few beers last night which made me immediately brighter.
