Just found out yesterday that my son lost $600.00 dollars from his banking account, because some &#@%@(!*%@* stole his card number and used it in St. Petersburg Florida at a Wal-Mart. He went to the bank and they told him that he was the sixth person to come in with this problem. I know they had something on the news last night and I was just wandering if anyone else had been hit.

Keep an eye on your money because other people will take it if your not watching.:furious3::furious3::furious3:

They got me for nearly $2000. It happened on my debit card and my bank says I should get it back but it takes 10 days. I have several friends (all in Edmond) that have also been hit. Looks widespread in Edmond and the secret service is involved.

The bank seen the high spending which is not normal for his account, so they canned his card and he found out when he went to purchase something and they told him that his card was no good. At least the bank stopped it from being worse than it was. The bank is telling him that he should get his back, but not a sure thing.

Just another reason to use credit cards instead of debit cards.

well I am trying to get my credit card debt paid off so don't carry them anymore. I usually use cash but sometimes don't have it or its to difficult (like paying for gas). Good news is that I am being told that since it is a Visa debit card it will be the same as a credit card just a 10 day delay in getting the money back which fortunately I can handle right now. If not then I am going off on the bank as I caught the charge before it went through and said to cancel it. They said that their agreement with Visa makes them put it through and then dispute it.

that is my understanding as well.
a Visa debit card carries the same security as a credit card.

Yeah if you have the money in savings to cover any bills that pop up for 10 days. You're definitely covered and can get perks if you use a credit card responsibly. With a debit card you risk having your account overdrawn, then causing checks to bounce, not having money in your account to pay the mortgage, etc. Much less risky to use credit cards than debit cards in situations where you worry your number may be compromised.

I agree with Bill, while it's great they will cover you. Some people don't have the money to wait 10 days.

So what's a good answer? My credit union pays 4% interest on my checking account up to $30,000 as long as I do 12 "signature based" debit transactions a month and 1 direct deposit. While it is not a lot, it is still better than .5-1.2% paid on savings.
