NEW YORK (AP) — Ozzy Osbourne is expressing his sadness over the death of Ronnie James Dio.

Dio died Sunday of stomach cancer at the age of 67. He had replaced Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1980.

On Monday, Osbourne paid respects to the man who would reshape the legendary heavy metal band.

Said Osbourne in a statement: "I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Ronnie James Dio. Metal has truly lost one of its greatest voices. My heart goes out to his family and to his many fans."

He added: "Love and respect."

Dio put on great concerts. I saw him a couple times in the city. They always had huge stage props and interacted witgh them during the show. One year the stage was a huge castle and this fire-breathing dragon flew in. Another year there were these great big stainless steel spiders.

When Dio left Sabbath, he took the drummer (Vinnie Applice) and got this new up and coming guitar player no one knew about who would go on to be in Whitesnake when they broke it big and replaced the dead dude in Def Leppard (Vivian Campbell).

Dio had some great songs over the years, including Holy Diver, Last in Line, We Rock, Rock & Roll Children, Stand Up and Shout, Gypsy, and my personal favorite, Rainbow in the Dark.

Many people don't know Dio was also the lead singer of Elf (more famous songs 'Hey, Look Me Over' and 'Hootchie Cootchie lady') as well as the more well-known stint with Rainbow ('Man on the Silver Mountain', 'Catch a Rainbow', 'Kill the King') and then replacing Ozzy in Sabbath.

Tenacious D wrote a song about Dio on their first album (Pass the Torch).

Not only does Dio have the most talked about band-name art of any band, probably EVER (it is said if you turn it upside down, it reads "Devil") he is also credited with starting the metal music genre using the 'metal horns' or devil horns. Additionally, Dio had some of the most provoking and yet ellaborate album covers ever. One thing about Dio is that he never did things half-ass.
