EDMOND — A 12-year-old Edmond boy has become an overnight sensation thanks to the Internet.

Greyson Michael Chance exploded on the music scene — a video of him performing Lady Gaga’s "Paparazzi” reached more than 2 million views on YouTube.

The video caught the attention of producers of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” who flew Greyson to Los Angeles on Wednesday to sing on the show. His performance will be seen locally at 9 a.m. today on KOCO-5.

The YouTube video was taped April 12 during a talent show featuring sixth-grade vocal students from all five Edmond middle schools. Greyson was the evening’s final performer.

The video was posted online April 28 and slowly attracted thousands of views. Tuesday, that number had surpassed 1 million. By noon, DeGeneres’ producers were calling.

Kelly Cheek, music teacher at Cheyenne Middle School, said Greyson is drawing comparisons to singer Justin Bieber.

"I knew he was talented, and the kids just rant and rave about him,” she said. "I knew when he performed at this concert that he was going to be a huge hit, but I had no clue this was in store for him.”

Kendall Cook, a sixth-grader, has known Greyson since they started school. She remembers the first time he tried to step into the spotlight.

"He tried out for a talent scout when we were in third grade but was told he didn’t have enough talent,” she said. "We knew better.”

Students at Cheyenne Middle School are saying Greyson is destined for fame.

"He’s going to be successful because he is very humble and really good for his age,” said eighth-grader Rylei Mellius. Her sister Gia, a sixth-grader, is helping organize a watch party for Greyson’s TV debut.

DeGeneres posted a link to Greyson’s YouTube video on her Twitter page Wednesday with these comments: "Never been more excited to have someone on my show.”

A Facebook fan page called Greyson Michael Chance: We Are Your Fans had nearly 10,000 members. Greyson is the son of Scott and Lisa Chance.

Greyson Chance to make return visit to “Ellen DeGeneres Show” Wednesday

Posted by brandyon May 20, 2010M at 9:46 pm

Edmond Internet music sensation Greyson Chance, 12, will make his second appearance Wednesday on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The show airs at 9 a.m. weekdays on KOCO-5 in Oklahoma City.

“I have a busy week ahead of me.. Last day of school tomorrow, and going back to LA.. I will be on Ellen show again on Wednesday ,” Chance wrote on Twitter (@greysonchance) today.

This time, DeGeneres’ producers sent cameras to Greyson’s Edmond home. Here’s the description of the episode, from the Ellen website:

Ellen just can’t stop thinking about GREYSON CHANCE! Since she featured the amazing 12-year-old, his YouTube video has received over 27 million views! Ellen sent cameras to his home in Oklahoma so we could all get to know him a little better. She’ll show it to you when he’s here today.

DeGeneres initially invited Greyson on her show after a YouTube video of his voice-and-piano cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” started racking up views. The YouTube video was taped April 12 during a talent show featuring sixth-grade vocal students from all five Edmond middle schools. It was posted online April 28.

Greyson flew out to Los Angeles May 12 to tape the interview and perform “Paparazzi” on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The episode aired May 13 and also included a surprise phone call to the boy from Lady Gaga herself.

“Everyone loves you so much, so keep following your dreams and work really hard, and stay away from girls, and be focused,” she advised, referring to Greyson’s comments about getting lots of girls’ phone numbers since his talent show performance.

“Don’t be nervous today,” she added. “You already won over everybody’s hearts.”

Although no official announcements have been made, several Internet sites are reporting that Greyson has turned his winning ways into a record deal with Interscope Records, Gaga’s label home. Again, neither Interscope Records nor Greyson’s camp have made an official announcement confirming the reported deal.

But the New York Post reports that Greyson’s school-aged sister and dad confirmed the Interscope deal, but said they’re under orders to keep quiet about it.

“He signed (with Interscope) but the managers said we really couldn’t talk about it,” sister Alexa Chance said from their Edmond home, according to the Post report.

The Post also reports that Greyson has heavy-hitting representation with Guy Oseary, who is Madonna manager.

It will be interesting to see what Greyson has to say about the Interscope reports on Wednesday.

Ellen signs Edmond boy to record contract
Greyson Chance signed to Ellen DeGeneres’ record label

EDMOND — On an episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that aired Wednesday, the talk show host announced she had signed 12-year-old Edmond resident Greyson Michael Chance as the first artist on her new record label, eleveneleven.

Chance, a student at Cheyenne Middle School, became an Internet phenomenon two weeks ago when his performance of Lady Gaga’s "Paparazzi” started racking up YouTube viewings. To date, the video has been seen more than 30 million times on the site.

This was Chance’s second appearance on DeGeneres’ show. The talk show host, who also is a judge on "American Idol,” said it was Chance’s online performance and subsequent guest appearance on her show that prompted the start of the record label.

"Greyson ... inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven,” she said. "He is my first artist and we are making a record together.”

In recent weeks, DeGeneres had staged an online talent search called "Ellen’s Wonderful Web of Entertainment,” and Chance’s video was one of the featured clips aired on the show, which runs at 9 a.m. weekdays on KOCO-5. In addition to announcing the recording contract, DeGeneres said Chance won the talent search and the grand prize, $10,000. He was also given a piano by Yamaha Corporation of America.

The episode also featured video shot at Chance’s home last weekend, including interviews with parents Scott and Lisa Chance and siblings Tanner and Alexa. In addition, his classmates were shown in a feed watching Chance’s appearance from the school gymnasium.

Rise to stardom

Tanner Chance said it started when he sent producers of DeGeneres’ show a link to his brother’s YouTube performance. Lisa Chance described how quickly her son’s stardom took hold.

"The whole experience was so fast,” she said. "His YouTube went up and a couple of days later the views were getting crazy. I got a call (from the show) when I was at work and it was very fast and six hours later we were on a plane.”

Chance said the response to his performance and his emergence in the national spotlight still surprise him.

"It’s crazy thinking about 30 million people,” Chance said. "It has been two weeks and it still hasn’t sunken in yet.”

"I’m so excited for him, but I know his life is going to change,” said one of his teachers, Sally Old Crow.

Later in the show, Chance debuted a song he wrote and arranged, "Broken Hearts.” He also told DeGeneres about a key sign that Edmond was showing civic pride for its rising star.

"The biggest snow cone place is Bahama Ice ... tons of people go there every day,” Chance said. "And so they made a snow cone for me: it’s called the Greyson Michael Chance Snow Cone. If you have your own snow cone, you’re big in Edmond.”
