My back's just not responding to treatment. No big deal. So my surgeon says he wants to send me to get some steroid / collagen / whatever, shots into the ol" spine stick and maybe it'll "Jump start" some healing. I say "Whatever... I just want to feel better."

So I go to the new Dr. this morning, get poked and prodded around and he asks what pain medicines / muscle relaxers I'm on. (It was all in that 16 page "New Patient" form I filled out, so why ask me?") I tell him and he says that prolonged use of my muscle relaxers may cause kidney / liver issues down the road. He then asks me what I'd Like to be on. Cause when it comes to pills he's my man! No kiddin, the dude actually spoke those words to me! My reply was, "Whatever... I just want to feel better." So he pokes around some more and tells me he wants to put me on morphine.... MORPHINE!!!. He says that's the best course until we do my spine shots. I'm apprehensive but I say, "Whatever... I just want to feel better."

So we fill out forms and he brings his PA in to gawk at me. Then says, "See ya in a few weeks". As we're walking out his PA hands me a urine cup and asks me to fill it up. I tell him that i went in the lobby before I came in specifically because i didn't want to have to go while I'm waiting to see the Dr. I tell him I'll run down to the Chicken Express and get a couple of large iced teas and be back and raring to go in an hour or so. This dude tells me, "Sir we're going to have to ask you to not leave the lobby until you're able to give us a sample." So the Dr, walks by , hears whats up and he tells me that because of the morphine they need a urine test to see what other pain meds i may be taking. So now I'm pissed!!! I didn't ask for any drugs from this dude, I don't particularly want what he's prescribing, and they're treating me like some crackhead criminal who can't be trusted to leave the lobby! The nurse brings out some water for me and I start coolin' my heels in the lobby waiting for nature to take it's course. And now I'm just livid!!!! Which probably doesn't help the situation..... I so badly want to get up, tell them to buzz the door, (No escape without the receptionist buzzing you in or out. This joint's like a jewelry store in the ghetto!!)and tell them to "f' off on my way out the door. BUT!!! My Dr. referred me to this place and it's taken two weeks to even get an appointment. So any request by me for another specialist will only delay me from getting on with my life by another half month or so. So there I sit, and sit, and sit. FINALLY Mission accomplished I get my morphine prescription, (BTW heroin is synthetic morphine according to the nurse,. YEA!!) and get buzzed out. My 30 minute Dr.'s appointment took 3 HOURS 2 of which I was being held like a felon waiting to go the the slammer!!

"Whatever... I just want to feel better."

No big deal. They were just trying to protect you and themselves.

Morphine and heroin are both produced from Opium and are natural derivatives. There are synthetic opiates such as hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and hydro- and oxycodones. Not that it makes much difference.

Pain medicine doctors always check a urine for other drugs and to make sure you are taking what you say you are taking. They do it to everyone so you were not singled out. Hopefully the epidural steroid injection they are going to do will get rid of the pain and you won't have to take the drugs for long.

Thanks Doc. That's my hope too.

Be prepared for side effects from taking morphine. From my own personal experience of dealing with back pain and taking morphine, I would strongly suggest loading up on fiber and have laxatives available. I was advised prior and didn't follow the advice....HUGE mistake on my part. The problems associated with not being able to relieve yourself can be worse than the back pain and could require hospitalization. We all have a tendency to say "yeah right...ain't gonna be a problem" but until it happens...most of us are completely unaware of how bad it can be.

Fiber Con is the way to go. Or magnesium tablets. Don't use psyllium fiber laxatives--unless you like bloating and gas. (And really, who doesn't? :D)

Memphis gave me the whatsup about the fiber / laxative / stool softeners awhile back. I've been on the meds for 6 weeks now, so the whole "It's like trying to shove a pear through a keyhole" issue has been resolved. Good to know for anyone who may see something like this on their horizon though.

I was thinking of the whole experience yesterday, and I think I was just surprised by this particular place. This place just had a methadone clinic / workers comp -insurance fraud feel to it. Just kinda skeezy. I've had such top notch physicians working on me that I was taken aback by the place. But my surgeon recommended this guy specifically and I trust him... so we'll see.

Can't this whole situation be remedied by one trip to a bad mexican restaraunt?

I'm about six months behind on all the board happenings. I hate to read you're going through all this. Nothing worse than back pain/sciatic pain. Been there done it, have the huge scar as a souvenir. I hope it gets resolved for you soon.
