Oklahoma State has the chance to sweep all three regular season games in the Bedlam softball series when it takes on Oklahoma tonight in Norman
It won’t be easy.
"Anything can happen in any game,” said third baseman Mariah Gearhart, OSU’s leading hitter with a .386 average. "Especially in this conference.”
The Cowgirls face Oklahoma at the OU Softball Complex at 7 p.m. with the two squads tied for second place in the Big 12 with identical 10-3 conference records. OSU defeated OU 3-2 on April 7 in Stillwater and 1-0 on March 6 in Oklahoma City.
Thanks to Kat Espinosa’s no-hitter, OSU is coming off a 1-0 win over conference leader Texas, snapping a three-game losing streak.
"It helps our confidence knowing that we can struggle and overcome it,” OSU second baseman Alysia Hamilton said.
The Sooners have won four straight games with two-game road sweeps of Baylor and Nebraska. OU’s pitching staff leads the Big 12 with a 1.60 earned run average, which ranks the Sooners No. 10 nationally. Keilani Ricketts leads the way for the Sooners’ staff with a 22-8 record and 1.45 ERA.
Amber Flores, OU’s all-time home run leader with 53, is the Sooners’ top batter with a .383 average. Freshman Jessica Shults has made an immediate impact with 13 home runs, an OU freshman record.
Cowgirl pitcher Anna Whiddon earned both wins against the Sooners earlier this season. She has a 20-4 record and 2.15 ERA this season. She joins Espinosa (18-4, 1.29 ERA) to form one of the conference’s top pitching tandems.
"It’s always a tough game with them,” said first baseman Julie Ward, OSU’s leader in home runs (nine) and RBIs (49).
"It’s pretty much a pitcher’s duel. We have to do everything right to win this game. It gets your nerves going.”
