Texas....there's just no place like it. And maybe that's a good thing.
(P.S. I was born and raised there--I'm allowed to say it!)

That kind of bond issue would alert me not to move to Allen. My nephew went to school in Allen and we went to a few of his games about 10 years ago. Their old stadium needed some work but I'm not sure they needed this kind of upgrade. Oh well, they are paying for it themselves, it's none of my business.

Never will forget working on a client job 4 months out of college in 1979 in Odessa. We had to work late on a Friday night, and went to a Denny's (of all places) to eat afterward. The Midland/Odessa football game had gone on that night, and 4 little old ladies (who obviously had attended the game and I swear all of them in their 80's) came in and sat at the booth right behind us. We laughed so hard we had tears in our eyes when these 4 octogenarian ladies started dropping the F bomb about their F'ing QB and their F'ing coach.
THAT......is only in Texas.

It doesn't bother me, the local voters decided they wanted half of that years bond package to go to a football stadium. Bond money can't be spent on teachers salaries, ect, has to go to bricks and mortar, which is true in Oklahoma as well.

I just think its great, honestly. They wanna pay for it, it is important to them, the community identifies with it and it will help develop kids. If you read the article, they are spending just as much money on a new state of the art auditorium and band facilities (which Allen has the largest HS band in the nation, supposedly).
Good for them.

Too late for me.
When I first moved here in 1991, the program was not very good. But, with all of the home building and development, the tax base soared. They now have a new high school that rivals alot of junior colleges and an indoor practice facility that is supposedly better than alot of college and pro facilities. Needless to say, the football program improved since then.

Allen's a good / great school district , they rank 72nd in the state out of 948, It just seems like there HAS to be better use for 60 million bucks. Or just don't spend it at all.

Seems they have lots of money to spend on whatever they want.
The stadium was part of a larger $120 million bond package passed in May 2009 that included nearly as much money for a state-of-the-art auditorium for performing arts
The town approved a bond package of $219 million in November 2008 that called for the building of two new elementary schools, the purchase of 45 school buses and improvements to many of the other elementary and middle schools in the district

I live in Plano, our department moved en masse from Oklahoma City. Why? because it is an outstanding place to live and work and the incentives were many.
This seems a lot for a stadium, but you can bet they have an ROI element to it, that is to continue to attract families and Companies to the general area. That is not to dis anywhere, but this money is not spent blindly, and trust me, the schools here are fine, the academics and environment for the students get plenty of money.
