Running back Bell signs one-year deal with Lions, will compete for starting job

After losing a bidding war for halfback Julius Jones, the Detroit Lions went back to their own roster and re-signed Tatum Bell.

Bell

Bell, 26, agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million deal to stay with the Lions. He came to the Lions last season from the Broncos in a trade that included tackle George Foster. Foster agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million deal over the weekend.

With Kevin Jones coming off a torn ACL, Bell will be given the chance to start this season. He started four games for the Lions in 2007 and had 182 yards on 44 carries last year.

In his final season with the Broncos in 2006, Bell had 1,025 yards and a 4.4-yard average. On any given play, Bell has the ability to break a long run because he has great speed and elusiveness.

If Bell has a great season, he is hoping to hit a big payday in 2009.

Did I dream this or didn't Tatem request to be traded and then was benched the rest of the season? I hope he get's a chance to showcase what he's got.
I've always liked to watch him break the line and kick it into high gear.

As much as that sounds to us that is peanuts in comparision with most running backs in the NFL. I wish I would have been is a "skills" position because the more times your name is announced the more money that you make.

I hope he is as good with his money as VMO seems to be.
It's a shame when you see guys blow & go then wind up broke.

Tatum seems like he has a good head on his shoulders. A decade in the league as a #2 running back will have a guy set for life. Just think if he has a break out season & ups the contract!

Man that would be sweet!

The men in the trenches only get their names announced when they do something wrong.

Here's an example of the "big money": yesterday Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals signed a 4-year $40 million contract extension with the team. Granted, he's one of the very best WR's in the NFL, but still. That's the big money.
