OSU Notebook: Washington's status

After making 27 consecutive starts at center, Oklahoma State's David Washington broke his leg in last season's loss at Troy. Sophomore Andrew Lewis was inserted at center and the Cowboy offensive line went on to have a strong season, paving the way for a rushing attack that was the Big 12's best. The Cowboy linemen gave up only 11 sacks all season.
On a limited basis, Washington is involved in spring drills. Whether he returns to the center position or moves to guard has not been determined.
"You know how Wick (offensive line coach Joe Wickline) moves those guys around," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "Lewis held his own, but Lewis didn't really block anybody in a fashion that you'd be fired up about. He just kind of drew a stalemate a lot."
In the middle: During the spring-practice period, OSU coaches are hoping see improved play within the defensive interior. Of particular interest to Cowboy fans is the progress of tackles Tonga Tea and Swanson Miller.
After transferring to OSU last year from Snow College in Utah, Tea's impact was minimal. His playing time was limited because of a lack of conditioning. OSU coach Mike Gundy says Tea has lost about 20 pounds and should be more effective.
Miller is a 330-pound junior college transfer, rated a four-star national recruit by Rivals.com.
McQuarters visits: Former OSU star R.W. McQuarters, who last month won a Super Bowl ring with the New York Giants, visited the Cowboys' practice on Wednesday. In two consecutive seasons, a former Cowboy savored a Super Bowl victory. Last year, offensive tackle Charlie Johnson and the Indianapolis Colts were NFL champions.
The hitting begins: After non-contact practices on Monday and Wednesday, the Cowboys were in full pads on Friday. The hit of the day, Gundy said, occurred when safety Lucien Antoine collided with wide receiver Dez Bryant. Antoine is one of the five junior-college defensive newcomers who are involved in spring practice.
