Position: Guard
Class: Freshman
Height: 6-4
Weight: 175
How difficult is it to keep up in school when you miss classes to play road games?
“It’s real hard for me because I’m from a high school where I was a 3.6 student and being gone all the time and just being busy with practices and tutoring and eating and being gone, it’s real tough. It really is.”
Any reason you chose jersey No. 15?
“I was going to be 33, but Marshall (Moses) stole it. It was going to be 11, but that’s retired. I couldn’t get it because it (belonged to plane crash victim) Nate Flemings. So I just thought and I was looking at pictures and I saw the good people — Randy (Rutherford) was 15 and John Lucas was 15. Some good players have been 15.”
What’s your hidden talent?
“I can surf. I love surfing. My whole family lives in Tampa and West Palm Beach. They all live in Florida. My dad’s side and my mom’s side live in Florida. I was like ‘I want to surf’ and I got some surfing lessons and have loved it ever since.”
THE BREAKDOWN
Looking back
Byron Eaton scored a career-best 26 points Saturday and hit a game-winning free throw with 12.6 seconds left in OSU’s 61-60 upset of fourth-ranked Kansas. The Cowboys won a third consecutive game, including two straight against ranked teams. For the first time since 1995, the Pokes beat a Jayhawk team that was ranked in the top five.
The week ahead
Tuesday: at Missouri, 8 p.m.
Saturday: vs. Nebraska, 12:45 p.m.
OSU, which ended a 19-game road losing streak at Texas A&M, will try to win a second consecutive road game during a Tuesday trek to Missouri. The Cowboys haven’t won consecutive league road games since beating Baylor and Texas A&M in 2005. On Saturday, OSU will try to beat Nebraska in a regular season game for the first time since in OT in 2004.
The big picture
Is the heat off Sean Sutton?
Here’s what Eaton said after ambushing Kansas: “I’ve been hearing things about (Sutton possibly being) out at the end of the season, and I don’t want that to happen. I’m going to try to do whatever I can do for my coach to stay here and for me to have a great senior year. If they still do that and it happens, it happens. But I’m going to fight for my coach.”
Why is Eaton scoring more?
He’s drawing fouls and getting free points at the foul line. Eaton is 32-of-36 from the line in the last three games. Eaton was a .688 free throw shooter during his first two seasons. His free throw percentage is .835 this season.
Will the KU win pay recruiting dividends?
OSU’s biggest victory of the season was witnessed by recruit Roger Franklin of Duncanville, Texas (and 40-45 football recruits who were on campus for Junior Day). Franklin was accompanied to Stillwater by Andre Johnson, his uncle and AAU coach. Franklin has a long list of suitors.
