Hawkins gets another year despite 4 losing seasons

By ARNIE STAPLETON – 1 day ago

BOULDER, Colo. — Colorado coach Dan Hawkins will get a fifth season in Boulder instead of a pink slip and a $3.1 million buyout.

Athletic director Mike Bohn announced Thursday that he's sticking with his coach despite a 16-32 record, including 2-20 on the road.

The Buffs have endured four consecutive losing seasons under Hawkins, who has cleaned up a program tarnished by scandal under his predecessor, Gary Barnett, but has been unable to find success on the field.

The Buffaloes (3-8, 2-5 Big 12) wrap up their season Friday against Big 12 North champion Nebraska (8-3, 5-2).

They can't afford to pay the buyout, plain and simple.

The buyout is probably what kept his job but this years team seems much inproved over last years. I think he is making some progress towards a winning program and he may get there next season.

Several alumni already offered to pay the buyout.... that ain't it.

I'd say it's probably level heads and solid decision making. I think Hawk can get it done, just like the guy at KU, Pinkel at MU, etc., etc.

Colorado was competitive this year, they just didn't get over the hump. They gave OSU and Nebraska all they could handle late in the season.

Those guys aren't dumb, especially AD Boone, he's one of the best in the business.

He has not been involved in a scandle has he? It is nice to see a good guy get an extra chance.

The only "scandal" is playing his son.

When a coach loses, they will use anything as fuel for the fire.

Hawkins probably doesn't have the talent at CU that he had at Boise, but he really gets those kids to play hard. It is also hard to rebuild a program after they have been rocked by scandal the way they were. I think he will eventually get it done.

Teams like Boise can win with "lesser" talent because they arent playing Big 12, Pac 10, SEC, etc... competition, week in & week out.

We will never win Big 12 until MG is willing to replace an ineffective QB

Heard it on the radio ..... "The offense contributed nothing". Well, that sum up everything. MG must be willing to go to a backup QB when the offense is not working the whole day. Also, our offense has not been very effective since LF left
