Does anyone know if we are recruiting, Tyrell Fortune, 215 lbs. out of S. Lakeridge HS, in Lake Oswego (Portland area), OREGON? This guy is still unsigned and the #1 ranked High Schooler at 215 lbs. I have never seen a wrestler overpower his opponent like this guy does. If he can just get one hand half way around one thigh, the guy is going down. He then goes under them and lifts them off the mat for a slam take down.

We are in an era when bonus points can make the difference between winning a tournament or fininshing third. Tyrell Fortune is bonus points waiting to happen. He gets a lot of pins and a lot of technical falls where the guy just quits and doesn't want to go back out on the mat against him. He is also interested in playing football and was a wide receiver in HS.

Iowa State is really after him but he has yet to commit to anyone. We could use him as bonus points are very important in todays scoring.

I haven't seen this guy, but I've seen a couple of wrestlers who fit the mold that you described (where they could just overpower their opponents)...both of them were from my high school and both went on to be national champions (one of them was a national champion in 2 different weight classes in back-to-back years) in high school...

Unfortunately, neither of them made it at college because of grade issues (and one of them got stuck in Russia, although he wanted to wrestle for the US team this year, but it doesn't look like that'll be happening)...

Unfortunately, 215 is a bad weight going from high school to college.

You either have to lose (somehow) 20 lbs, which by the sounds of it, this guy would lose a lot of muscle in doing so, or you have to gain 50-70lbs to compete in HWT (285). Why there isn't one or even 2 weight classes between 197 and HWT, I have no idea, but they probably need one.

Poke4life is right on. With only 9.9 schollarships for wrestling its hard to offer unless your pretty sure he can fill in a paticullar weight spot. And if the powers to be in college athletics, probablly would like to cut the number of weight divisions and schollarships more to better their athletic budgets.

A good heavety weight presently has to have good wrestling and athletic skills better than a football player. Case in point Conrad Minnesotta HW,6'6" 285 plus, smallish HWt's don't stand a chance going down under king Cole.

Yes there has been exceptions in the past when a little guy won at HWT, but that's exactly what it is presently at this era - exceptional.
