The family of 2-year-old Aidan Wright said the boy was still in critical condition today after being found unconscious over the weekend in a pond near Kannapolis.

Aidan, who turned 2 today, disappeared Saturday as his parents and other family members were setting up an early birthday party for him at a residence on Hilton Lake Road.

The boy was taken to Carolinas Medical Center--NorthEast in Concord.

The family released a statement today thanking those who helped Aidan after the accident.

"The efforts and quick actions by immediate family members (father Russell Wright and grandmother Sonia Sinclair), as well as additional rescue personnel who later arrived at the scene, have been, and continue to be, greatly appreciated," the statement said.

"Today is his birthday. As of this date, Aidan has been stabilized, but his current condition remains listed as critical. He is receiving round-the-clock care by the dedicated staff at the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital, and we, as a family, remain at his bedside.

"Many concerned people in the community and media have expressed concern regarding Aidan. Appreciating your interest in his condition and ongoing care, at this difficult time, we kindly ask for your respect of our privacy....

"Prayers and best wishes on behalf of Aidan are most welcome," the statement said, "and we greatly appreciate the numerous offers of support from so many people throughout the region."

In response to requests to assist the family financially, a special account in Aidan Wright's name has been established through any branch of Wachovia Bank.

In a written statement, family members thanked well-wishers and medical personal for their help during the past week. “The efforts and quick actions by immediate family members (father-Russell Wright and grandmother-Sonia Sinclair) as well as additional rescue personnel who later arrived at the scene have been, and continue to be, greatly appreciated.”

Aidan, who turned 2 years old Thursday, is being cared for at the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital in Concord.

“Many concerned people in the community and media have expressed concern regarding Aidan,” the statement continued. “Appreciating your interest in his condition and ongoing care, at this difficult time, we kindly ask for your respect of our privacy. Prayers and best wishes on behalf of Aidan are most welcome and we greatly appreciate the numerous offers of support from so many people throughout the region.

“In response to numerous requests to assist the family financially, a special account has now been established through any branch of Wachovia Bank in Aidan’s name.”

Haven't considered this but I don't think aidan is going to have any of the problems the Shriners Hospitals cover. I may call and ask them for more information.

OK ... maybe we will be able to go there now ...

Apparently, ORION has never had a young child and does not realize how quickly they can get away from you if you turn around for even a second.

I'll pray for him.

People need to watch their kids better and this stuff wouldn't happen.

Best wishes.

I remember when my first daughter was 2. I put her in her room to play, while I took out the trash, 2 and a half minutes tops. When I got back she had completely antiqued her whole bedroom with baby powder. It was all over everything, right down to the clothes in her dresser drawers.

I realize how it could happen especially if a group of adults are around, everyone thinks everyone else is keeping that eye out on them. Kids are sneaky and sly, especially toddlers. I bet that room still smells like baby powder.

Still wishing Aidan a speedy recovery.

I woke up one morning before it was light to find our front door standing open and my 22 month old Ian gone. He was standing at the end of our LONG driveway (it was an acre lot) stark naked, his jammies and dipe lying on the ground next to him, watching the cars go by.

I'm still not sure how he got out of the crib, got the front door open, etc. (it had a deadbolt that was out of his reach, so he had to have moved a chair or something to unlock it). Another morning I woke up to find him watching cartoons downstairs (not yet two years old.) There was an overwhelming smell of peanut butter, and he had it all over his face and hands. Eventually I found a broken glass jar of peanut butter in the kitchen trash can, every piece of broken glass picked up and in the trash can, and he didn't have a cut on him.

Toddlers are scary.
