I had lunch today with someone on the "inside" of the OSU Football program. Someone so much on the "inside" that I simply can't say who it was, so you'll have to trust me on this. I was told the following to be fact:
* If Texas plays in the Title game, it is 100% guaranteed that the Fiesta Bowl will select a 10-2 Oklahoma State. Led pipe solid the Pokes go to the Fiesta if we win in Norman.
* The Cotton Bowl is expecting to take the winner of the Bedlam game (if available).
* The Holiday Bowl is a lock for Nebraska.
* The Alamo Bowl is expecting to take the loser of the Bedlam game.
Now, my take on the above is as follows:
- We discussed the idea that even a Bedlam losing Oklahoma State would be higher ranked and have a better record than Oklahoma. The "official" word is that the Cotton does not care about that. They'll take Oklahoma if Oklahoma wins Bedlam.
- We also discussed that there appears to be a mutual agreement between the Holiday and Nebraska. Highly probable that the Huskers will go to San Diego regardless of how everything else falls.
- Obviously, if Okla State wins Bedlam, we won't be available to the Cotton Bowl. In that event, my guess is that you can expect Texas Tech likely to go to the Cotton ahead of Oklahoma.
So, I think the Bowl picture for us appears to be as follows:
Given a 10-2 Oklahoma State team.
Title game: Texas
Fiesta: Oklahoma State
Cotton: Texas Tech
Holiday: Nebraska
Alamo: Oklahoma
Given a 9-3 Oklahoma State team.
Title game: Texas
Cotton: Oklahoma
Holiday: Nebraska
Alamo: Oklahoma State
I was disappointed in this. I would have thought that the Cotton would have been thrilled to have a highly ranked, 9-3 Cowboy squad. That appears to not be the case. So, it looks like we either get the BCS bid, or its back to San Antonio again for our Pokes. I always enjoy San Antonio, but I would have to feel playing in the Alamo Bowl again to be a disappointing end to this season.
Hopefully, we'll take care of business in Norman. A Fiesta Bowl trip to punctuate the season would be a fitting final game for our group of seniors.
