View Full Version : Looks like either Fiesta or Alamo....

I had lunch today with someone on the "inside" of the OSU Football program. Someone so much on the "inside" that I simply can't say who it was, so you'll have to trust me on this. I was told the following to be fact:

* If Texas plays in the Title game, it is 100% guaranteed that the Fiesta Bowl will select a 10-2 Oklahoma State. Led pipe solid the Pokes go to the Fiesta if we win in Norman.
* The Cotton Bowl is expecting to take the winner of the Bedlam game (if available).
* The Holiday Bowl is a lock for Nebraska.
* The Alamo Bowl is expecting to take the loser of the Bedlam game.

Now, my take on the above is as follows:
- We discussed the idea that even a Bedlam losing Oklahoma State would be higher ranked and have a better record than Oklahoma. The "official" word is that the Cotton does not care about that. They'll take Oklahoma if Oklahoma wins Bedlam.
- We also discussed that there appears to be a mutual agreement between the Holiday and Nebraska. Highly probable that the Huskers will go to San Diego regardless of how everything else falls.
- Obviously, if Okla State wins Bedlam, we won't be available to the Cotton Bowl. In that event, my guess is that you can expect Texas Tech likely to go to the Cotton ahead of Oklahoma.

So, I think the Bowl picture for us appears to be as follows:

Given a 10-2 Oklahoma State team.
Title game: Texas
Fiesta: Oklahoma State
Cotton: Texas Tech
Holiday: Nebraska
Alamo: Oklahoma

Given a 9-3 Oklahoma State team.
Title game: Texas
Cotton: Oklahoma
Holiday: Nebraska
Alamo: Oklahoma State

I was disappointed in this. I would have thought that the Cotton would have been thrilled to have a highly ranked, 9-3 Cowboy squad. That appears to not be the case. So, it looks like we either get the BCS bid, or its back to San Antonio again for our Pokes. I always enjoy San Antonio, but I would have to feel playing in the Alamo Bowl again to be a disappointing end to this season.

Hopefully, we'll take care of business in Norman. A Fiesta Bowl trip to punctuate the season would be a fitting final game for our group of seniors.

Yeah, that sounds extremely disappointing scenario (if OSU loses). Is this counting in a loss to ou this weekend, if they lose? That would mean the Cotton Bowl would prefer a 7-5 ou team over a 9-3 OSU team. Ouch! Double ouch!

That's pathetic on the Cotton Bowl's part.

There will be, at most, two ranked teams from this league at the end of the season. And they're willing to pass one up based on one game?

I hope OU loses the next two and has to go to El Paso.

I don't see how this can happen if Tech somehow beats OU.

That makes no sense; you saying if uo kills ttek but we beat uo that when we go to Fiesta the Cotton is going to take a 4th place ttek to the Cotton over a 3rd place uo?

Not gonna happen. Even if uo squeaks by ttek. Winner of that game gets the Cotton if we beat uo.

How does the Fiesta work? If we finish behind the horns and they go to the champ. game does the Fiesta have to take us, or could they choose someone else?

I'm going to be pissed if ou goes to a better bowl when OSU is ranked higher and has a better record. Besides, that would mean Dean Blevins was right. He has been saying all along that OSU has to beat ou to be considered for the Cotton Bowl.

Oh, heck. Beat ou and see what bowl it gets you.

They don't have to take us. But, Vette is saying they will take us if we finish 10-2.

Vette, if OU loses to TTU and beats us, do u think the Cotton Bowl will still take a 5 loss OU team over us? Also, any insight into who will be the SEC participant in the Cotton Bowl? What about the opponent in the Alamo Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl? Thanks!

Well Vette is not the only one. Stewart Mandel with Sports Illustrated has said in multiple articles that the Fiesta Bowl has an unofficial obligation to take a Big XII team if one is available to take. He has said if Texas is in the title game (making them unavailable for the Fiesta) and OSU qualifies, then they will take us over all other at large teams including Boise State, Pac ten team, Big ten team, Big east team, or even ACC team.

I think what i was told was based on OU winning out. I think if OU were to lose to Texas Tech, then OSU might be back in the mix for the Cotton Bowl regardless of the outcome of Bedlam. However, that is my speculation only.

Nothing was said about opponents. My opinion is, if you go through the ordering process, TCU would be a lock for the Fiesta Bowl on the other side of the Big-12 team (if one is eligible).

I've not really looked enough at the SEC to say who would likely be there. I'm seeing Mississippi being mentioned a bunch.

My wifes booking rooms for us and the daughters this afternoon for the Fiesta, any suggestions?

Reason I asked about their having to take us is that Boise St and TCU have a ton of buzz going for them about how they should possibly be playing for it all, and we barely beat Colorado last night. So will an win over ou really make us attractive enough to trump their press? What about if when we beat them it makes uo non major bowl eligible? Where does the 6th place B12 school go again? Does that kick us up or down, or is it inconsequential in the eyes of the Fiesta?

Then I'll take that as Gospel Pokevette....

But won't book my flight until it's official, as things tend to happen occasionally and lead pipes really haven't been used in decades. ;)

the hotel valley ho in scottsdale is awesome. it is a remodeled "motor lodge" type hotel that has been around since the '60s (or maybe earlier). it is one of the coolest hotels i have ever stayed in.

A little pricey, but it looks like that's right up my alley! Thanks Aggie Spice!

Scottsdale (eastside) is across town from the stadium (westside). Not a terrible drive but there are resorts (if that's what you are looking for) that are closer.

If you are just looking for a room there will many more options on the interstate near the stadium.

We are booked across from the stadium. Did that some time ago. I do believe the Cotton will take the goons if they win out. If they lose tomorrow and beat us, I don't think they will go. I still think we will.

But, I don't have hotel reservations anywhere but Arizona!!!!
