View Full Version : Coach's Breakdown vs. Colorado

Coach back again for another breakdown.. will label this game "The Battle with the Buffs" .. not to be confused with "Battling in the Buff" which would make it more female friendly I am afraid (at least for my wife.. she would be a lifelong OSU fan then :cool2:)...

Matchups-

1. OSU's mindset/readiness- Two things concern me about this Thursday night game... 1. Playing a late Saturday night game (a hard hitting one at that) and then playing again Thursday.. not much time to heal injuries, soreness, get mindset on the next opponent. Any quick turn around that is not the normal schedule can be tough for the players AND the coaches... I would hope the group of seniors would help solve the readiness problem... 2. This late in the season you get some mental fatigue... all the weeks of film study, lifting, pounding on each other takes a huge mental toll (not just physical) on the players, on top of that you have everyone saying how bad Colorado is and how good we are.... It can really effect how hard you prepare for a game... Soreness+Short week+Playing a less than average team= Slow and Sluggish game.... It will be interesting to see how motivated we look straight out of the gate...

2. OSU O-Line vs. Colorado D-Line- I think we can take advantage of Colorado's DB's... however I think Colorado does have some dangerous D-Lineman... The best D-Lineman we need to account for is Marquez Herrod, who is ranked 41st in the NCAA in sacks (with 6.5) and 71st in Tackles for Loss with 9... NO one else on the Colorado Defense is even ranked in the top 100 in either of those categories... so needless to say, the focus needs to be on him (he was absolutely dominated the Kansas game.. 3 Tackles for Loss for a loss of 28 yards (3 SACKS), 3 solo tackles.. so he can have monster games).
I also want to see continued improvement on our O-Line... I think we have improved every week except against Texas Tech.. we had some troubles opening holes for our runners the whole first half, but recovered and had a good game the second half... I would love to see a dominate performance this week.

3. OSU LB's vs. Colorado Offensive Line/QB- Our LB's (Lavine, Sexton, Booker) can have a monster game this week... Colorado is only ranked 112th in the NCAA in run offense averaging only 90 yards a game... we are ranked 7th in rushing defense allowing only 89 yards a game... This is key to keep this trend up... we need to force Colorado to try and rely on the running game and shut down the passing game (59th, getting 220 yards per game) which is the only thing Colorado can do to hurt us... make them have to try and gain yards on the ground, if they have to depend on the running game.. then that is Game, Set, Match for them... Passing game is the only thing they can half do productively.

4. OSU Punt Return vs. Colorado Punt Coverage- We haven't made as many plays in the punt return (our best special team area) as I would have liked... and when we do, it seems like we get a penalty... so, I look for a big play out of Parrish this week... Colorado is ranked 61st in the NCAA allowing only 8.64 yards per return (this is better than us AND Texas) so it will be tough.. however we average 12.84 per punt return (good enough for 23rd) ..so we need to win this area of the game.

Players to Watch-

1. Robinson- Of course, all eyes on how he responds to the hard hit, short week, sore shoulder, questions of will he/ won't he play.... I feel like if he plays it needs to be for a short time and only when needed.... I would rather have a healthy QB going to Norman, than a blowout of Colorado... of course if it is a close game..then we need to have our best out there.

2. Toston/Hunter- It would put a smile on any coaches face to have this 1-2 combo in the backfield... I would assume Hunter is close to 100 percent again and Toston is just a beast at getting those extra tough yards... pounding back and speedy back..good stuff.... I would like for them to see most of the action against Colorado.. not letting Robinson get knocked around in the pocket... good running game= less hits on QB

3. Tyler Hansen (CU QB)- He took over in the middle of the season for Hawkins, good QB for his lack of experience... had a solid game against A&M, drove them down for the winning score and completed a beautiful pass for the winning touchdown.... can make mistakes but also can hurt you if you can't pressure him...

Score Prediction-

OSU- 34
Colorado- 13

I see us running the ball a lot, controlling the clock, defense having a solid game... Colorado maybe getting a cheap touchdown late in the game.... I see Cox picking off another pass... couple of sacks out of our D-Line.. and maybe even 100 yard game for Toston or Hunter

Of course that score is dependent on the fact that Robinson plays at least the first half... I am not sure how to judge them without Robinson playing since I can't remember the last time Robinson didn't play and Weeden or Cate played...

It was the Grambling game, Weeden played the whole 2nd half (except for one snap by Cate). BTW Weeden looked great. :D

I'll say around 31-7 OSU (with or without Zac)

I kind of figured Weeden took over the #2 spot after Cate was knocked out after one snap. So is Cate still considered the #2?

And Coach, are you against Thursday night games? I believe there's no real need for them on any regular basis, and I think they should only be allowed the week after to a Saturday bye weekend. But I suppose it gives us almost a half week more to prepare for uo.

GoPokes... I am not totally against Thursday night games as it gives the smaller schools (Toledo, Western Michigan, Fresno State,Hawaii) a chance to be on national tv where as they wouldn't usually be on national tv.. It gives those small schools a chance to earn some tv revenue and to recruit to kids across the country who aren't chosen by the "elite" teams... suppose a kid in Washington can see Central Michigan play on tv and can get a chance to still play D-1 ball...

HOWEVER, I am not a fan of LATE season Thursday or even Wednesday night games...and not a big fan if you are a big school in a major conference like us...
What do we gain from playing Thursday night, I know what small schools gain..but what do WE gain?
1. National TV exposure? Well we been on National TV on Saturdays basically every week anyway
2. Gives our injuried guys no treatment time/practice time- A short week really hurts us in preparing for Colorado and it hurts us trying to get some injuried players healthy....

I know people will say...it is only Colorado... however, it is a BIG 12 game... every game is important in this conference.. I would still like to have a full week to work our game plan... Game plans have to be rushed in order to get them in before the last practice (Wednesday) or walk through (Thursday) so makes less reps and less time to go through the adjustments... just makes it tough on everyone..

I am more ok with begining of season doing a Thursday game right after a late Saturday game... but game number 11?? Seems odd for us to do this this late...

Two things that are good about playing this game is: you do get 2 extra days of rest before going to Norman next Saturday AND you get a couple more days to prepare for OU....

Gundy didn't originally want to play this game on Thursday (not sure what made him change his mind) but I leave you with one question.....

Would Alabama/Florida play a conference game on Thursday night?? Just seems out of place for us to play on Thursday night....

IMO...

Gundy has said Cate is #2, usually, you don't lose your spot due to an injury. Gundy has said that Cate has a better grasp of the offense than Weeden

Coach, I can only see them relying on the running game if 1) OSU has shut down their passing game or 2) it is a close game. To me, it seems that if OSU gets out to a sizeable lead CU will be forced to pass to try and score quickly. But maybe Hawkins is such an idiot he will try to beat OSU with the run and shorten the game for OSU.

Good points about the smaller schools Coach. We're getting spoiled with all our TV time.

I hadn't heard that about his grasp on the offense. I was under the assumption they were still neck and neck, and Weeden played very solidly against Grambling.

I still say sit Zac on Thursday. All games are important, but playing time wouldn't hurt the backups, and Robinson could probably use the rest.

Yes, but a nationally televised game during a day full of nationally televised games isn't the same as a nationally televised game on a night with no competition.

Except for the NFL Network's Thursday night game tomorrow night, Oklahoma State's game against Colorado is the only football game on television. Plus, it's on a station (unlike the NFL Network) that the vast majority of television-possessing Americans receive, so it isn't really fare to make the comparison to OSU's Saturday games to Thursday's game as far as exposure goes.

2. Gives our injuried guys no treatment time/practice time- A short week really hurts us in preparing for Colorado and it hurts us trying to get some injuried players healthy....

On the flip-side of that, however, is the fact that we now have longer to prepare for Oklahoma.

I understand that the Cowboys can't afford to overlook anybody, but honestly, I would rather have a shorter preparation period for an opponent like CU and a longer one for OU than vice versa. Or, for that matter, even the normal seven-day period.

Gundy didn't originally want to play this game on Thursday (not sure what made him change his mind) but I leave you with one question.....

That's not entirely true...

In the past, Gundy has said that he wouldn't want to play a Thursday game if the opponent was idle the previous Saturday (thus giving that team 11 days worth of preparation).

In this instance, however, he supported the move because Colorado also had a game the Saturday prior.

Would Alabama/Florida play a conference game on Thursday night?? Just seems out of place for us to play on Thursday night....

Maybe not, but then again, Oklahoma State isn't an Alabama or a Florida. Yet.

That said, it isn't like ESPN is getting a bunch of no-name non-BCS teams to play it's Thursday slate, either.

Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Miami and N.C. State have all played Thursday games, and let's be brutally honest here - the state of those programs have a lot more in common with the state of OSU's than the perennial powerhouses.

In my opinion, it's a smart move.

Actually, there is competition. There's an NFL game on Thursday night. It's only Miami/Carolina, but still.

Back to short week games.....Doesn't Colorado have a short week too? Not sure the arguments against a short week took that into account. It's a short week generally for both schools and longer prep time for the next game, in our case, OU. That makes it a smart move in MHO. Go Cowboys!!

OkState918... I already made this statement in my post if you look at the highlighted part of my post, I made arguements also for why this is a good idea... Not sure if you saw it, but I do agree with you here..

This is our first home Thursday game since 1995 or 1996 (I forgot which one it said)... I will promise you Gundy was still uneasy about playing this game on Thursday, your routine gets shortened by two days for prep.... I don't think it was accepted just because Colorado played Saturday as well,... I think it was accepted because of what you said yourself, National TV coverage with little competition and added $$$ to play on Thursday....

However, you make a valid point GT and Miami have both played on Thursday... However, my point still stands... how many of the "elite" teams do this? GT is coming back the last two years and Miami has been really down the last couple of years... Not really "elite" teams...

Plus, something to consider, how many recruits are going to be able to travel on a Thursday to a Thursday night game and still make it back to school for football or for classes....

So we are hurting yourself there, we all know how kids are influenced by crowds, live experience... I don't see many recruits being able to make this game... They can watch it on tv..sure... but not the same...

CU is also playing with a shortened week... and they were on the road last week... AND this week... their preparation time is even shorter than ours.
