I posted a similar topic over on Rivals. I have been without a dog for a couple of years and am looking to get two within the next couple of months ( small & 1 big). If you have a dog let me know about it. Would you recommend the breed?
I am looking for:
*light shedding (grooming is not a problem)
*The dog will be indoors
*I prefer a dog that is sporty
*No howlers or intense barkers
*Has to be able to deal with three 9 to 12 year old brothers that think the are John, Pat and Mark Smith. They wrestle a lot and are always game for an intense verbal debate too. So the dog is going to have to be emotionally strong.
*No smelly hounds
*I know potty training is going to be difficult but I want a dog that is smart enough to master it. I will not have patience for a dog that knows where to do it’s business but would rather take care of it inside where it is warm and dry.
P.S. Jimbob, no offense but I really don't like poodles.

No Yorkie. Can't take the wrestling kids.
Weenie dogs horrible with potty training
I'd say Shitzue. Great dogs all the way around.

I had weenie dogs in mind when I wrote the potty training comment. We raised them when I was young and those things were potty stupid. Well, they were kind of stupid in general.

With those requirements, you might see what breed of stuffed dogs they have down at Toys-R-Us.:D

This Yorkie i have is the smartest dog i have ever owned. No, really, she is. Absolutely amazing. You can see her little brain working when you tell her something. She listens to what you tell her to do, and she goes and does it. It's that simple. They need alot of attn though, and i've spent lots of hours working with her.
The shitzue we have is 14 years old, and she's still going good. Even tempered, yet very protective of the family. She's been a very loyal dog to our family. I bought her for my son when he was in the 5th grade, and he's OSU post grad three years.
They do need to be groomed. Once every two weeks is fine for some, once a month for others (if you bathe in between) My dogs are given baths on a weekly basis.

It's the yappy little rats that give the breed a bad name.:D

I'll second the Shih Tzu vote. I was very leary getting a litle dog like that, but I'll be honest... I wouldn't trade her for any other dog. She has been a very well behaved dog. Has a ton of energy when it's time to play, but calms right down to be a pretty good lap dog.

See the sig...
My family dog has been an indoor dog his whole life, has mastered potty training (and knows to go to the door and bark when he wants out to go to the bathroom)...is extremely smart...sheds (that's his biggest downfall) but it's not too bad of a clean-up...doesn't bark at all really indoors (unless he needs to go out, or he knows it's dinner time and you haven't fed him yet...he's really smart)...plays well with other dogs and with kids and adults...anyway, I love labradors as they just look like great dogs and are really great dogs....

I'd say a lab is perfect for you, but they shed!!!
My parents have a Scottish Terror and I think one of those would be a good fit for rambuncions boys also as he is a very tough dog that loves to wrestle adn play hard.

labs shed, but it's manageable. our lab is simply fantastic...he doesn't bark much, he's good around kids, etc. contrary to what sometimes seems to be popular belief, labs are great inside dogs. they want to feel that they are part of the family, which obviously they will not if they live in the back yard. labs want to be around people, which is why they constantly dig out or jump the fence if you try to leave them in the yard. we crated kelso until he was about 4 and now he stays out in the house during the day. we still go home and let him out at lunch, though. if you really want to save yourself some work, get a lab from lab rescue that is a year old or older...they usually come to you with the hard work (potty training, etc) already done.

I can't believe you don't want a Bassett. Smelly? Sure. Barky/Howly? You Bet. But they make up for it in so many other ways! :D
All kidding aside they aren't for everybody, but I sure love mine.

I also would say a Lab. Our lab, Iba is an outside dog during the day and an inside when we get home. Her personality is just like Spice said, they want to be near people. She is great around babies so that makes us comfortable once we decide to get some. The shedding is minimal and she's a great retriever. I could go on and on with recommendations. My Aunt is very experienced with rescue labs.
They are great, but it does take some time to get them use to a good home, but once they find out that they are loved, they will be like a best friend.
Our other dog, Gal, is a Blue Heeler. That dog is my number one, I've had her since 96 and she darn near knows every word in the English language. She sheds something terrible, but hardwood/ceramic floors are easy to clean.

We crated Boomer until he was 3, I believe...he now just roams the house and has a bed in the living room...he stays in the house all day long (and doesn't really move around much anymore, because his joints are in bad shape) but has been that way for as long as I can remember...
And I agree with your assessment that labs just want to be around people...when we lived in South Carolina, we kept our dog (a black lab named Harpo, after Harpo Marx) in the back yard, and he was constantly getting out (we put a lock on the fence gate, but never actually clamped it locked, and he would manage to wiggle the lock out of the hole, then lift the gate's handle and get out...he was a really smart dog)...anyway, when we got Boomer as a pup, we decided he was going to be an indoor dog, because he would get more attention...and he's been a great dog and has never really had any problems living inside...

We found our dogs.
I have a 9 week old Great Dane. He is solid black and because of his huge feet I have named him Dez.
My wife has a baby shih tzu named Max. He looks a little like that boxing guy Don King. Black hair with a little white stripe on the top of his head. He also looks a little like one of the bad grimlins. He is definitely not Gizmo.
Both are smart and already love their crates and are both going potty in the back yard. They are little thieves though. They will invade the other dog's crate and steal toys. This may be a problem for Dez as he is growing by the day and will not be able to get into Max's crate much longer to get his stuff back.
Both dogs will look awesome in orange.

Great choices Dirt. Your wife (and you) will love the Shih Tzu. Ours was a brindle color, dark brown, with a little orangish blonde and some white. She's 5 now and has really lightened up in color. The Great Dane will be a cool dog. Post pics when you get a chance. Better move all breakables that are under three feet from the ground now. Dane's tails can be deadly when they get going, especially as puppies! :)
Enjoy!

What about an English Mastiff? The kids could wrestle with it. It's short-hair. I have no idea if they potty-train easily but just think... you won't have any problem finding where it did poop! :D
I would say Rat Terrior for the small dog. My friend has one, and she is very well behaved, and potty trained easily.
For your big dog, I would go with a lab, or a lab mix.
Although I must say I love my jack russel/beagle mix dog. He sits at the back door and barks when he needs to go out side. And if he's hungry he'll stand at the grauge door and bark. awesome dog!
*edit* guess I should read the whole thread, before I post eh? Congrats on your dogs man.

Our Shih Tzu will go lay down by her food bowl when we start cooking. She knows she gets fed when we eat. Plus, alot of times she won't even eat until we are sitting at the table eating ourselves if there's food in her bowl. She's wierd.
