Of course I grow my own Turnips but you can get what you need at the grocery store.
2 purple top turnips.
Leaves from the above or sold seperately.
2 14oz. cans of low sodium chicken broth.
2 cups of water.
1 carrot
1 stalk of celery.
4 slices of bacon.
1 teaspoon of garlic in oil.
2 teaspoons of cajun seasoning (Tony Chachere's Creole)
optional - fully cooked smoked sausage.
Chop bacon into 1-inch pieces. Place bacon in stock pot and fry. Don't drain for flavor.
Cut carrot and celery to 1/4-inch pieces.
Carefully add chicken broth, water, garlic and seasoning to bacon.
Peel and dice turnips into 3/4-inch pieces.
Add turnips, celery and carrots to pot. bring to boil.
Rinse the turnip leaves. Peel leaves from stem. Rip into smaller pieces.
Carefully add leaves to pot.
Optional - slice 1-inch pieces of sausage and add to pot.
Cover and simmer for 45 - 50 minutes.
