Indiana launches new investigation into alleged recruiting violations against Sampson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana's athletic director has seven days to investigate the NCAA's accusations of recruiting violations against coach Kelvin Sampson and then recommend what steps the university should take, the school's president said Friday.

"I am deeply disappointed by these allegations," Indiana president Michael McRobbie said during a news conference. "I fully understand the desire by many people for us to move quickly to bring this situation to resolution and we intend to do just that."

He said he has authorized athletic director Rick Greenspan to head a panel that includes attorneys and other athletic officials to examine the NCAA allegations. The NCAA said in a report Wednesday that Sampson and his staff violated telephone recruiting restrictions imposed because of his previous violations at Oklahoma, then lied about it to the school and NCAA investigators.

The allegations of five major NCAA infractions set off widespread debate over what the university should do next and whether Sampson should continue coaching at Indiana, which hasn't had a major NCAA rules violation in nearly half a century.

McRobbie said he does not have preconceived ideas of what Greenspan's conclusions will be, so he is not sure what actions the university will take.

"Let there be no doubt, these are serious allegations of misconduct," McRobbie said.

He said officials must balance a prompt resolution with the need to be fair to Sampson and his staff.

You can read between the lines or another way to put it is "the hand-writting is on the wall". IU will soon fire Samson but they want to collect enough evidence so they can do it in a way that will cost the University the least and save at much face a possible.

I think you may have pegged it Poke John.

I truly doubt that the man will be able to coach in D-IA ever again.

I disagree. Look at all the guys in the NCAA that have infractions. One being Eddie. Bob Huggins, cheated, got drunk with students, and a DUI and is sitting on the sidelines right now coaching. He probably won't be at IU but he'll go somewhere. He's a good coach and another university will take a chance on him.

Yeah, he's won way too much to not get another job somewhere desperate for some success. He won't go to a big name basketball school, but he'll be somewhere.

He's guilty of writing his own ticket, to nowhere. I'm glad to see him go. I've never liked him because of his incessant whining on the sidelines, and his negative recruiting; and apparently crooked recruiting. I would have felt the same way if he had coached anywhere.

It just couldn't be happening to a more deserving guy.

He'll coach again somewhere there's no doubt about that. His infractions are pretty minor in the fact that he hasn't been caught paying players or anything of that nature. He'll end up at a mid-major somewhere in a couple of years. Then he'll take that team and make the tournament and we will get to hear how he's a changed man and that he's learned from his mistakes, yada, yada, yada. It's just the nature of college athletics.
