Reid may be leaving Cowboys

By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

In his roles as Oklahoma State's backup quarterback and offensive team captain, Bobby Reid is expected to be on the Cowboys' sideline during their upcoming bowl game (most likely, the Dec. 31 Insight Bowl against Indiana).

After the bowl, OSU coach Mike Gundy said, Reid may no longer be a Cowboy.

Reid may choose to forfeit his final season of eligibility and explore options in pro football, Gundy said. A fourth-year junior, Reid is scheduled to graduate this month.

"We're just speculating . . . but I can't imagine that he would come back for (the 2008 season)," Gundy said Friday. "Bobby and I haven't had that conversation yet, but we will within the next week or so."

As the starting quarterback in 2006, Reid had 2,766 yards of total offense. This season, he was benched after two games. His replacement, sophomore Zac Robinson, went on to break the school record for single-season total offense.

On Sept. 22, after OSU defeated Texas Tech, Gundy used his postgame press conference to condemn a column in The Oklahoman that he felt was unfairly critical of Reid.

Reid missed two midseason practices without permission. Recruited from North Shore High School in the Houston area, Reid was the highest-rated QB ever signed by OSU.

The current OSU-Reid relationship, Gundy admitted, is strained "because Bobby wants to be the starting quarterback, and we thought Zac Robinson was the better player and we made the switch."

In last week's loss at Oklahoma, Robinson sustained what Gundy describes as a "severely bruised" right shoulder. Robinson will return to practice Dec. 9, Gundy said, and should be 100 percent for the bowl game.

I don't think I'll ever understand Gundy's strategy when it comes to press conferences. He's usually very secretive and aloof with his answers ("I have no idea", "You know more than I do about this", etc.) when it comes to touchy subjects. Now here he takes a 180 and is very speculative. He said he hasn't talked to Reid but thinks he'll leave. Ahhhhh! Well, at least the press can't say he's predictable.

I would like to see Bobby stay here and play in some capacity. I would hate to see him go to a lower division school and just fade away. He couldn't go to another Div I school, right? I think the NCAA closed the loophole that if you graduated from your original school but still had eligibility, that you could transfer to another Div I school and play immediately. In any case, I'm glad he came here.

Reid is a prototypical Pro QB.
He has the build and abilities.

It is amazing that OSU fans have totally turned on one of their own. The kid is good. Something happened that changed his gameplay, and people want to throw him under the bus.

I personally think he has been overcoached. Watch how loose he used to vplay back in High School and early in his OSU career.

I think when he ran, he was told "you need to pass it", then when he throws a pick its "you need to run it then". I think he plays tentatve because he got mixed messages. If he gets into a program and can play his game he will have success.

Since he hasnt played this year, he may need to go Arean ball or CFL for a while, but I will not be suprised to see him in the league in a few years.

Good Luck Bobby & thanks for all you've done here.

I agree...usually we are super secret about everything. Here he just comes out and says, he won't be around next year...I woudn't.

Weird.

I agree with BBB. We run an offense that is not 100% geared to Bobby's talents. Bobby has the arm....I don't think anyone can question that. His passing skills need to be refined and his decision making skills need to be sharpened.

I could very well see Bobby as one of those QB's that 5 years from now, all of a sudden ends up as the second string QB for some NFL team and eventually end up starting.

I know it sounds crazy but we all know the kid has the talent. He may just have received the wrong signals as BBB alluded too.

I would guess that Gundy does have a pretty good idea that Reid is leaving, and he wants those recrits who are friends of Alex CAte to know that Cate will be the backup next year, not Reid.

I can't see him playing pro ball. At least not with the field awareness he has now. He looks off, make that looks directly at his receiver every time. NFL D backs will eat him alive.

NFL QB's stare down wr's all the time. I used to get pissed about this as well when it came to Reid and then I started noticing it more and more with some of the best in the game. Now checking down to a 2nd wr is a different story but every weekend guys stare down wr's. Physically I think he can play at the next level but he's far from a finished product mentally.

If he wants to leave after the season I'm ok with that, I feel sorry for the guy. The offense he was recruited to changed after his first season and I don't think he ever fit into what Gundy wanted. He put up one of the top 3 seasons by a QB ever at OSU and was never embracced by fans the way a guy like that should have.

Good luck to Bobby in whatever he decides to do. Once a Poke, always a Poke. He'll have my support no matter.
