In his roles as Oklahoma State's backup quarterback and offensive team captain, Bobby Reid is expected to be on the Cowboys' sideline during their upcoming bowl game (most likely, the Dec. 31 Insight Bowl against Indiana).
After the bowl, OSU coach Mike Gundy said, Reid may no longer be a Cowboy.
Reid may choose to forfeit his final season of eligibility and explore options in pro football, Gundy said. A fourth-year junior, Reid is scheduled to graduate this month.
"We're just speculating . . . but I can't imagine that he would come back for (the 2008 season)," Gundy said Friday. "Bobby and I haven't had that conversation yet, but we will within the next week or so."
As the starting quarterback in 2006, Reid had 2,766 yards of total offense. This season, he was benched after two games. His replacement, sophomore Zac Robinson, went on to break the school record for single-season total offense.
On Sept. 22, after OSU defeated Texas Tech, Gundy used his postgame press conference to condemn a column in The Oklahoman that he felt was unfairly critical of Reid.
Reid missed two midseason practices without permission. Recruited from North Shore High School in the Houston area, Reid was the highest-rated QB ever signed by OSU.
The current OSU-Reid relationship, Gundy admitted, is strained "because Bobby wants to be the starting quarterback, and we thought Zac Robinson was the better player and we made the switch."
In last week's loss at Oklahoma, Robinson sustained what Gundy describes as a "severely bruised" right shoulder. Robinson will return to practice Dec. 9, Gundy said, and should be 100 percent for the bowl game.
