Looks like the dumb yellow dog won in the end. We came home today and walked out on the back porch and about 10ft away was a very dead skunk! Which would explain the funny bad smell in the dog room this morning - that was a combination of skunk and sewer (which turned out to be dead skunk).
Hopefully that will serve as a warning to all the other skunks to stay far, far, away!
