It helps when you can out recruit other teams you play and for the most part no one plays defense in their league. Routinely national HS passing records are broken in that league.
Interesting approach.

Two things that stick out to me that make his philosophy sound at the highschool level whereas it wouldn't work anywhere else.
1. Average punt of 30 yards, so giving up 30 yards of field position for the 50% odds of converting a 4th down is a reasonable statistical bet. In college and pros, it is a 35-40 yard advance after a return, so not such a good bet.
2. And on kick-off's average starting field position of the 35 versus losing an onside kick attempt of 47 (12 yards difference) for the chance at getting the ball back is a reasonable bet. In college and pros the average starting position is the 25, so that extra 10 yards is material in the calculating odds and outcomes.
And obviously, the confidence in your defense is paramount. However, I agree with him that onside kicks and 4th down attempts should be used more than they are at the upper levels. But I also think that the U Tex baseball coach using the bunt (small ball) more than anyone at the college level is brilliant, and the statistical analysis is similar.
