Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy is set to receive a contract extension.
Oklahoma State will recommend to its board of regents that Gundy receive a one-year contract extension, the school announced today.
The regents will meet Dec. 7, and if the board approves OSU's recommendation, Gundy's contract would be extended through the 2013 season.
“We appreciate the job Coach Gundy is doing and believe he and his staff are making progress in moving OSU football to the next level. I am particularly pleased with the success our student-athletes are having in the classroom under Coach Gundy’s leadership,” interim OSU System CEO and President Marlene Strathe, said in a press release from the school.
An additional year has been added to Gundy's contract following every season, which has given him a five-year contract throughout his time at OSU.
OSU completed its regular season last week with a 49-17 loss to Oklahoma. The Cowboys finished with a 6-6 record for the second consecutive season and are bowl eligible. Bowl announcements are expected Sunday. OSU beat Alabama in the Independence Bowl last year. Gundy is the third coach in OSU history to lead the Cowboys to two bowls in his first three seasons on the job.
“During the 2005 season we won just one conference game,” OSU athletic director Mike Holder said in the press release. “We saw improvement last year, and this year we were competitive in every conference game but the last one. That shows improvement to me.”
In Gundy’s three seasons, OSU is 17-19 and has improved from sixth, to fifth, to third in the Big 12 South standings. The Cowboys’ 4-4 Big 12 record in 2007 ties OSU’s second best conference record since the Big 12 was formed in 1996. The four wins equal OSU’s conference victory total for the previous two seasons combined.
OSU set a school record for academic all-conference choices (13) in 2006. OSU has also inked two straight top-25 recruiting classes for the first time in school history.

Only at OSU can 6-6 be considered improvement!

“We saw improvement last year, and this year we were competitive in every conference game but the last one." I wonder which game that was?

I DID NOT AUTHORIZE THIS EXTENSION!!
4. 11/30/2007 12:56:41 PM, SJ,
Only at OSU would they be satisfied and reward mediocrity.
5. 11/30/2007 1:18:20 PM, Jimbo,
Who is OSU? Is this UT-Stillwater, soon to become Boone Pickens University?

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKIN' KIDDING!!!! This clown should worry about being fired rather than celebrating an extension. This team's defense cratered even worse than last year and his coaching decisions and 'deer in the headlights' demeanor every Saturday show just how ridiculous it is for OSU to have hired a coach that no one in the country would have ever thought about. His tirade was staged and made us the laughingstock of college football. How much suffering do the loyal OSU fans have to endure?? Dear President Pickens, please fire this clown and hire a real coach and not Larry Coker who some have speculated that you want.
7. 11/30/2007 1:52:11 PM, John, Tulsa
This contract extension is a PR maneuver because coaches from other schools are telling football recruits that Gundy is going to get fired.

We all know Gundy should and would be gone if it was not for Pickens!!

I think it is great Gundy is getting an extension. I believe in tradition and he delivers the same old door mat of a team every year!

"Top 24 recruiting classes!" Maybe they were in the class room. Surely weren't on the field. Were any of the recruits defensive players? Why not?
15. 11/30/2007 3:53:11 PM, SG, BA
Classic OSU and Stillwater mentality, the ole" "look what he has done for the community" syndrome, especially when they've almost killed someone drunk driving or actually have killed someone driving (can't think of that Congressman's name at the moment)...but look what they've done for the OSU/Stillwater community.
16. 11/30/2007 3:53:54 PM, Brad,
Only OU would have so many lazy trailer park fans sitting on their butts collecting unemployment with enough free time to troll articles on OSU's coach and talk trash. Losers.
17. 11/30/2007 3:55:49 PM, SG, BA
But #16, but look what they've done for the community....
18. 11/30/2007 3:57:01 PM, SG, BA
I think that 2013 dates is the end of Boone's life expectancy

I'm glad to see Gundy get the extension. I know the record doesn't prove it, especially in close games, but he has made some tough decisions other caches would not have. Quarterback change (although Robinson should have been starting all season), kicking good players off the team, standing up for his players in a news conference, etc. He's an offensive minded coach, and that part has been successful. They definitely need to spend some serious cash of the defensive end though.

I don't really follow OSU all that much-saw the Nebraska and OU games last year and Texas and OU games this year. Outcoached Neb, got outcoached by Brown (horrible thing to contemplate) and outplayed by pro Sooners, but I believe unless a new coach completely steps on his dong (re Todd Burns) he should be given four years. 17-19 is absolutely mediocre any way you look at it, but give the guy one more year. This extension stuff seems totally unwarranted and more than a little nuts.
21. 11/30/2007 4:17:26 PM, yeah but, tulsa
17 wins - how many against high school teams? Aren't like 7 of those wins against Div II opponents?
-
I can't wait until they get a coach in there not afraid to schedule TU for non-conference games.
-
I guess this is great news for the rest of the Big12
22. 11/30/2007 4:36:44 PM, Pistol Pete Jr., Jenks
A 6-6 record is very respectable and makes OSU bowl eligible. And Coach Gundy stands up for his players to the media and kicks them off the team when they've committed serious crimes. Good for him!
With that kind of track record, OSU had to extend Coach Gundy's contract to keep him from being lured away by Michigan, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Notre Dame etc. (or LSU if Miles goes to Michigan). They saw how Miles and Jimmy Johnson were tempted by other schools and are smart to lock in Coach Gundy. I'm looking forward to more solid seasons like this one in the future.

#16 - RIGHT ON. YOU FORGOT TO MENTION THAT THE TRAILER PARK FANS WEAR THEIR OU WAL MART CAPS WHILE THEY TROLL.
