Coach back for his weekly insight and all you need to know about the upcoming game against the Mizzery Tigers.. oops I mean Missouri Tigers...
Ahh Missouri... the only state that has a liquor store, porn shop, and church on every exit off the interstate... TRUELY THE SHOW ME STATE!!

I am going to label this week: The Tail of Two Halfs... (get is Tail- Missouri Tigers..ehhh nevermind)

I think this win or loss will set the tone for the rest of our season.. if we can get a win then I think it can only add to the confidence of our program and help reach our goal: a trip to the Big 12 Championship Game. If we lose, then I fill like it can really make the month of October brutual for us. In other words, this game is very important. Missouri is a quality team that will be a measuring stick as to where we are mid-season.

Match-ups to Watch:

1. OSU D-Line vs. Mizzou O-Line- this is where the game will be lost or won.. can we get pressure on Gabbert? I can tell you from watching two Mizzou games... If Gabbert has time to pick and choose WR's.. then he will pick and choose for about 300 yards and a couple of touchdowns. However, when he is pressured, he will throw it up and make questionable decisions.. remember he is still a young Sophmore. If we can shut down the running backs and pressure with our D-Line..we win..that simple!

2. OSU WR's vs. Mizzou DB's- I have listened/watched every OSU game so far and I still can't tell you who Robinson is most comfortable with when Dez is not in the game... At times it looked like Cooper, sometimes it was Anyiam, recently it is Moore... it is a WR by committee.. The main question is who is going to step up in that leadership role and take the reigns as the "#1 guy" while Dezgate 2009 gets all worked out. If one or two guys can find some openings and give Robinson lots of options then it will allow the running game to be effective... if not, then they can just load the box and stuff the running lanes.

3. Special Teams- I have said it every week and I continue to use it this week... our special teams have got to continue to produce this week. Field position is essential in a game like this... big returns from Cox can swing momentum in a heartbeat. Also..have we fixed the punt return team? They were exposed against A&M.

4. Homecoming Events/ Mind frame- Does homecoming events and festivities distract the 'Boys this week.,.. DOES THE LATE START DISTRACT THEM.. sitting in a hotel room for a long period can be a stessor.. can we be the complete team physically AND mentally? You may be laughing but mindset is everything in football.. if you aren't focused then any team can beat you.

Players to Watch:

1. Hunter (RB) - Is he back or is he still out? If he comes back, how much time does he get? How does he handle being hit again on that ankle? All big storylines if he does make an apperance... Look for Toston to still see most of the action.

2. OSU O-Line- Ok, they think they have the final formula for a good O-Line.. now lets see how they handle an aggressive Mizzou D-Line...

3. Derrick Washington (Mizzou RB) - News flash, this guy is a great athlete... he can run, can catch, and can plow you over at 6-2, 225 pounds... he is a playmaker and we need to keep an eye on him at all times... he got some tough yards against Nebraska.

4. Gabbert (Mizzou QB) -Been impressed with his numbers being a first year starter (OF COURSE THEY HAVEN'T PLAYED ANYONE UNTIL LAST WEEK). He can make people forget about losing Chase to the NFL.... Doesn't seem to be a ultra fast scrambler but can sit in the pocket and rocket the ball downfield.

5. Sean Weatherspoon (LB Mizzou)- Seems to be all over the field , hunting down ball carriers and making big defensive plays... IMO the best defensive player ALL AROUND that they have... we need to be aware of him blitzing or where he is at for run blocking...

Score Prediction-

OSU- 31
Mizzou- 27

I think it will be a tight one.. I think OSU comes out and punches one in early and then see-saws back and forth with Mizzou until the 3rd quarter where we pull away and win on homecoming. It is homecoming and we still have the better offense...
*Been pretty close the last couple of games on the score prediction.. hope I am right again...

NOTE: IF WE WERE PLAYING @MIZZOU I WOULD BE VERY WORRIED. That is how much I respect the talent of this team.

We have to be able to run the ball and control the clock. If Gabbert is healthy, he will pick us apart, much like Colt will and Sam will and whoever is playing for Tech. From here on out, if we can't run the ball and be balanced once again we are doomed. Sure would like to see some more 7 minute drives the length of the field like the one at aTm.

I think it will be an OSU blowout or a close loss. Offensive game - blowout for OSU. Defensive game - probably a close loss for OSU.

I'm just not impressed with their offense and I think their quarterback looks down the receivers too much which should give the OSU dbs a chance to get in front of a few balls. Few or no turnovers and allow special teams to set up short drives and OSU will have a big game and a happy Homecoming crowd!

For what it's worth, Oklahoma State gave up more yards on punt returns on average to Grambling than it did to Texas A&M, so it isn't like punt coverage was as abysmal against the Aggies as I think you're making it out to be.

If anything, OSU would be better served by just avoiding stupid penalties in defensive situations. I still think that the Cowboys got hosed pretty good on a few pass interference calls against A&M, but even omitting those, there have been quite a few instances in which the defense shot itself in the foot by committing dumb mental errors.

I am with OSUFAN, for some reason I just see this as a blowout in our favor or a close loss (like so many others we have had against Mizzou). I can just see us getting a couple of turnovers and some big returns (or TDs) in special teams... and crushing them. I just feel that the team is due for a game like that.

On the other hand if it is a knock down, drag out, slugfest... I see us coming out on the short side of the stick...

OKState the numbers don't back up your claim... I went to the game notes for both the Grambling game and the Texas A&M game (located on okstate.com) Wanted to make sure I wasn't going insane and saw a different game.

Against Grambling- We allowed 1 Punt for 2 yards (2.0 avg.) and Kickoffs we had 2 returned for 32 yards which is a (16.0 avg.) With 7 Kickoffs as Touchbacks.

Against Texas A&M.. we had 4 Punts returned for 31 yards that is 7.8 avg. and Kickoffs were 4 for 114 yds. which is 28.5 average.

Breakdown:

Punts- GSU- 2.0 YARD AVG. TEXAS A&M- 7.8 YARD AVG.

KICKOFFS- GSU- 16.0 YARD AVG. TEXAS A&M- 28.5 YARD AVG.

So the numbers indicate that we had a worse special teams coverage against A&M than Grambling.

So, as I said... if you watch the A&M film you will see our special team coverages (punt & kickoff) had some busted coverages... they had some trouble breaking down and staying in lanes...

Coach:

I agree with analysis, but OSU will score more. OSU - 41, MU - 27.

I'm still feeling a little hinky about our offense and it's 'rhythm'. I just don't see it as having 'gelled', and able to be productive consistenly. Something just doesn't 'feel' right - is it the playcalling? is it Robinson's head clouded with the behind-the-scenes personal drama? has the o-line REALLY got the right combination yet? can Toston turn back-to-back-to-back strong rushing performances? will Anyiam stop dropping the easy passes? can our young TE's become big blockers? I just don't know....BUT, I do have some confidence that they can find their way.

For the defense...they aren't there yet, but they've come a long way, baby...I have some confidence in them. I think they will get to Gabbert hard and often, containing the pass game, and will nearly stuff Mizzou's run game.

Return teams will have a big day. Return coverage teams....they need to get their act together.

34-17 Good guys

I think it is simple, win the turn over battle, win the game. Lose the TO battle, lose the game.

+1. I would feel better if we had shown more consisitency is our offense to date. I hope they gel against Mizzou.
