View Full Version : Pre-Spring Practice the Defense

I thought it best to spend significantly more time discussing the defense. The consensus across the fan base, media and the authorities, the coaches is if we get improvement on the D, we can compete for championships.

The interesting thing about this Spring is we should know whether what type of team we will have next Fall. All but 1 of the players that should have a significant impact on our defensive performance will be on the field this Spring. The missing link, Booker an in-coming Juco from Texas. Last year when Beckman introduced the 'Black shirt' concept I thought that was a great motivator. There were times last year when I thought they should all be wearing 'White shirts' symbolizing surrender, however, the D did progress during the year and they played a really nice game in the Insight Bowl which should provide the platform to build upon.

The Super Bowl performance by the Giants documented what a great pass rush and defensive line can do for a team. Given a great pass rush, isolating your corners and playing man on man is possible.

The Big-12 is receiving national publicity regarding the number and quality of returning quarterbacks. While we typically build a Defense from tackle out, with an intent to primarily stop the run, the quality of QB play could dictate that we alter our philosophy, gamble on stopping the run and place more speed on the field and go from a typical 4-3-4 or 4-2-5 alignment to a 3-3-5. For the moment let's stick with the traditional and see what evolves this Spring.

DL
The nose tackle position will have Tonga Tea, Swanson Miller and Ahmad Jones pushing for playing time. Tea came to us last year as a JC AA. Typically the Jucos take a year to develop. Miller appears to be a larger version of Tea and with Jones to push both I would expect our run stopping ability to be improved.
The defensive tackle position will have Jeray Chatham, Jonathan Lewis, Shane Jarka, Chris Donaldson and Quincy Patrick. Chatham was the starter most of last year and we would have to expect him to leave the Spring in that position. I hope Donaldson redshirts, we really need to grow him into the position. Lewis will need to fight off Patrick and Jarka. Patrick to me is intriguing in that on passing situations he might have the ability to slide to the NG position. Jarka has demonstrated good push everytime in the game. The reports on him continue to say he does not have the build, but he certainly seems to have the motor. In any case with the potential rotation, this position should also should be an upgrade versus last season's performance.

DE
Nathan Peterson, our best, has left the building. If we could have paired him with another high energy DE and a stuffer in the middle no telling how many sacks he could have had. Well on to this year.

Prime returners, Derek Burton and Ugo Chinasa. Both 4 star recruits, Burton will be a Jr, too bad he didn't redshirt and Ugo will be 24 months down the road from major surgery and should be ready to go. Augmenting them will be a JC transfer Jeremiah Price, a speed rusher, Richetti Jones and Jamie Blatnik. With the talent of this group, we have the ability for putting solid pressure on the QB from the end positions. The mixing and matching could result in Shane Jarka moving to DE in some alignments.

One thing that will need significant coaching was our pass rush last year that other than Peterson resulted in us running completely upfield past the QB and exposing ourselves to easy scrambles by the QB.

Overall expectation for the DL, significant improvement, both in terms of stopping the run and in creating a pass rush. I see this group continuing to improve throughout the season and a really solid group for the 2009 season.

LBs.
Lavine was our best last year and I expect him to be the best this year. He has an ability to play both the run and pass effectively. Booker has the same build and speed that Collins had and on tape looks like a solid player. He may also have a better sense of the passing game and could be an upgrade for us there. The third LB spot could be the hybrid position that Woods played and the rumor is Sexton might spin down to that position.

Competing for time will be Justin Gent, Orie Lemon, and Seb Clements. Gent looks like a Middle LB, Orie seems too athletic not to play and Seb has had minutes after being a walk on. The players in development also are intriguing
Glover, Richardson and Alexander. All of these fellows have had nice accolades placed on them during their redshirt year. Glover could also map into a DE for pass rushing purposes. Richardson comes from Seguin and since he comes from Cleveland Vann's hometown then I have to get excited.

My expectation of the LBs, we need a healthy Lavine and Booker. Sexton will have to really step up to cover the multiple responsibility that Woods had. Donovan would frequently be moving and aligning his teammates, that coaching on the field was invaluable. While I don't expect Sexton to fulfill this role, he may be better able to stick with the smaller receivers. Our second team will be a work in progress, again talent wise an improvement, but they will need to gain experience early in the year.

Secondary
CBs, if Maurice Gray, a Juco transfer is as good as advertized, we will have an extremely solid 2 deep and I can never recall having seen that on a Cowboy team. Jacob Lacey really developed last year and did an outstanding job covering Indiana's AA in the Insight. Terrance Anderson seemed to have a good feel for the game and was well positioned on nearly all of the plays. Perrish Cox has great ball hawking skills, this could be his breakout year and the addition of Gray would give us 4 solid corners and an upgrade versus last year.

The safety position will return Price and perhaps Sexton. Ricky switched from offense last year and was clearly learning. He may turn out to be our center fielder this coming year. Andre could easily rotate down to the LB spot, but if he does not he will have extremely strong competition from the a Juco transfer Lucien Antoine and an early entry freshman Markelle Martin. Both of these guys are big time hitters, think of a young Mark Moore for a comparison. In the fall there will be another addition, but I would expect his contribution to be on special teams and that would be Victor Johnson. Again, I see an upgrade versus last year and ability to keep improvement going through the year.

In the safety category, I deliberately left Adrain Moore of the list. Based on his athletic skills he will be on the field somewhere, I just would like to see him tried at RB first.

New coaches, new responsibilities, more quality players, and I forecast better results.

Go Pokes!

Great post DNA!!!

Enjoyed the read. I agree with much of what you said, and I can't wait for spring ball to get here. Beckman has a lot to prove this upcoming season. He's got a lot of young talent to work with.

Swanson Miller needs to be a homerun for us. He must start at the 1 technique with Tea and Jones adding solid depth. I hope Jones has worked hard his redshirt year. He came in at 6'1, 319, and a little out of shape. We've upgraded here.
I agree that Chatham is your starter at the other DT. I would be surprised to not see Donaldson in the rotation. He's big...it all depends on what kind of shape he's in. Lewis has busted so far. Patrick and Jarka give us guys who try hard, but are undersized right now. There are alot of guys to work with here. A couple need to get bigger and step up.

DE is a position with serious talent.....Burton will start at one side unless Price is the real deal. Ugo needs to show what he's got in the spring because you know what? Richetti Jones is going to show up big time in my opinion. Both will play alot, but Jones is that pass rush specialist that will be on the field a bunch! Blatnik wow'ed us last fall with his massive bull rush that he used with great success in practice. His motor doesn't quit, and for what he lacks in size, he more than makes up with toughness and strength. He will play in the rotation for sure.

Linebacker is worriesome because of the unknown factor. We have Lavine, and he's a big, good looking linebacker. He's solid. I hope he gets better than solid this season....but we know what we have with him. The coaches expect Booker to start once he comes in August. Thats alot of pressure on a linebacker. He does look the part. He may have to work his way in. Gent has got to get faster if he wants to make an impact. Better DT's will help him, but I see him backing up. Sexton will come down and play some here because we have upgraded safety so much.
I still expect Richardson to be a starter at linebacker. May not be the first game, but everyone I've talked with, players, etc....say he is the real deal. Fast as lightening, brings the pain, and is a sure tackler. He's to small for the position, so he carries a chip on his shoulder....just what you are looking for. The other kid you mentioned is Glover. He's also been very impressive in his redshirt season. At 6'5, and over 220, he's a tall, rangy guy with great football insticts. He's gonna push for some time. Good competition here for sure.

DB's....I'm hoping Terrence Anderson kicks the blinders off, and comes out and shows what he has this spring. Kids got loads of athleticism. Lacey is solid, and ended the season getting better with each game....you gotta love that. Cox also needs to show why Miles called him the best db coming out of high school in america his senior year. I'm just going to wait and see with Gray....hope he's as good as some have said. That will be a solid two deep, with more youngsters have time to learn here as well.
At safety we have upgraded the team more than any other position, except for kicker. We bring in "the punisher", Lucien Antoine is my pick to shine this spring. His coach raved about him. He's only played ball for a few years, coming from Haiti. He brings that "street tough" aura about him from his childhood, and has a great knack for the ball. I think he wins a starting spot....or at least i'm hoping so.
Markelle Martin and Victor Johnson are two 4 star safeties that really know how to bring the pain. Victor is really good at it, and I personally love Martin. I think he's a little further along, bigger, and here for the spring, while Johnson is rated higher....either way, we've got two studs here for 4 years!!!
Price will have to show more to keep a position. Sexton will move because he just can't cover well in my opinion. Better play at safety and a strong pass rush from our DE's will allow our db's to play more bump and run. Coach Jones, the new db coach, promised us at the roundup that we would see more bump and run, jamming at the line of scrimmage. Hope thats true!!!
Adrian Moore is a stud athlete, hope we find him a position. Have seen many incredible looking athletes come thru OSU and never find a position to play. I still see Kye Staley as on OLB in a year or two as well, but I hope he proves me wrong at the rb spot. DJ Wolfe swore he would play rb at ou too, and he was a db in about two weeks of practice, lol.

We must improve dramatically on the defense. The athletes are there. Look up and down the defensive roster. There are 4 star athletes everywhere that most everyone wanted! Someone better coach their butts up, because the "no talent" excuse is not valid with this team!!!! If we are not a top 50 defense with this talent, then I don't know what these coaches need! Keep opposing offenses to 20 points a game, and watch us win in double digits every year!

I'm with you guys on most of that, but I do have a couple of variations.

1) I'm still really concerned about the DLine. We have more to work with, but we have so far to go, and outside of Burton, Chatham and Tea, we don't have any experience to speak of. (I know that Chinasa, Patrick and Jarka got some backup reps, but nothing substantial, IMO). Even at that, it's only six guys from an 8-man 2-deep that have any experience at all. I too have high hopes that Miller, Donaldson, A.Jones, Richitti, Blatnick and Price can have an impact, but we flat out don't know if they will, and Chinasa and Burton will both be a new starters on top of that (and Tea, he didn't start much).

Three new starters (essentially), and at least two in the 2-deep that have never played at this level.

Our old DLine didn't get much pass rush at all (no push up the middle at all), and didn't do enough on running plays.

I have high hopes, but for the time being, those hopes are based almost entirely on hype and potential.

2) I found it interesting that neither of you mentioned Q.Moore at the Safety position... he was seeing a whole lot of PT by the end of the season. Martin and Lucien are total question marks for me, yadda, yadda, yadda, With Fontenot and Thomas coming in from redshirt, my guess is that at least one of them doesn't make the 2-deep (likely Martin; we'll see what Spring can do for him).

I certainly hope that Sexton does NOT move to LB. IMO, we need to keep the guys in their positions and gain from their experience; the last thing we need is to start moving folks around again... I love Woods to death, but did not find him to be very effective the first half of the season. With all the supposed talent that we have at LB coming in, we should get those guys into the game and get them ready, rather than wasting a year moving Sexton around and then losing any experience that he might have gained. If we really needed help at LB, then move him, otherwise let's get our young guns some on-the-job training before conference play starts.

Our poor play at LB last year was one of the big reasons that our run defense wasn't all that strong.... Losing various guys and having new player (Woods) did not help matters either. It got so bad a one point, we had to move Rod Johnson back over from DE just to field a decent group of LBs.

3) I was looking at Gray's size and he's a little guy (ala, McLemore), but the stuff I was reading about him kept calling him a lock-down corner; and I don't recall that term being used about an OSU CB in quite some time... hope it's true.

Our front 7 is very, very light on experience, but at least we have enought bodies to throw in there. I like the heck out of the guys that we have available to play on the DLine and LB, but until I acutally see them do something, I'm not going to get that excited this year; besides, we also have a new DLine coach who's papers didn't excite me all that much.

I over hyped the potential contributions of our new guys last year, and it didn't come to fruition. I'm going to go into Spring Drills a little more reserved and see what, if anything, we've actually got to cheer about.

So is the whole Sexton-to-Linebacker thing definite? I must have missed something because I've seen it mentioned a few times in the last few days and didn't really know anything about it...

Everything I hear it is pretty definite. A buddy of mine talked to either him or his mom and that's what he was told.

and I think that both he and his mom both heard about it from the Internet message boards, and assume it is true.

Moving Sexton is all speculation. Even if they try him there during Spring, that doesn't mean he'll be effective, or that they'll keep him there.

Since Booker won't be on campus until Fall, they may take a look at Sexton this Spring so that they have something to compare.

My bank is on Glover, and/or Richardson, or Alexander before Sexton.

Spring is for experimenting.

Our safety play was some of the worst in the big 12. I expect both of those guys to lose their jobs, unless they really get better quickly.

Sexton is a great kid, and I hope he stays there and kicks butt, but we had the 110th ranked defense in the nation....everyone's jobs are on the line, and I think we will have at least 8-9 new starters.

I don't see him starting anywhere really, but just a message board opinion, and I love his mom, she's great to talk with, as is Andre.

I'm not really buying into any of that... Our play at DT had a whole lot to do with the entire defense, and our LBs were jumbled all season with rookie Woods starting, and Collins not finishing the season; plus we had no real experience backing up the DEs; especially with Chinasa coming off of injury.

Bang on Sexton all you want, but he has been a 2-year starter. Price was brand new at Safety, and it took him a while to learn the spot, but he did well enough to beat out some kids that had already been playing the position (Moore, Coe).

Both Chinasa and Price earned team rewards for their play last year.

I suppose Sexton got bad after his unbelievable RSFr season....

Yeah, you're probably right, people will say anything on these message boards. I mean what the heck do I know??? I guess we'll see, he could be a flop there and be switched back or something. Heck with as hard as he hits, I wouldn't doubt him ending up as a hybrid LB.

So, our "triple-digit" ranked defense that made the '88 sieve look "tight" will become "double-digit" ranked? We're on a roll now.....:p

well..... one has to wonder how much playing the toughest schedule in the country had to do with those triple digits, and certainly the explosive offenses that we faced had nothing to do with it either (as opposed to some double digit defenses that did not face our competition).

We might move into double digit defense simply because our schedule won't be as tough...

I wouldn't get to caught up in "absolute" rankings like total defense without keeping it in context of who we played. Clearly our defense was much betterr than some of those that were "ranked" higher than OSU, but they played weaker teams and impotent offenses it skewed their standings somewhat.
