According to The Helmet Project (http://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/), OSU wore two different football helmets during the 1967 season. I was in school that year, but I don't remember the change. Contributor Dan C. says OSU wore the numbered football helmet for the first five games and the Cowboy and bucking horse helmet the last four games. The question remains, what helmet did the Cowboys wear for the 6th game against Mizzou? I also wonder why the change in mid-season.

Those numbers were pieces of tape. It was pretty easy to get them messed up and they had to be replaced fairly often. Maybe it was difficult to predict numbers that would need replacing each week so they went to the horse so they could just order a single decal and not worry about what the number was. Phil Cutchin(head coach) came from Alabama so he may have brought the numbers on the helmet with him. That's just a guess so don't make any large bets.(:>)

Phil Cutchin was the head coach at OSU from 1963 to 1968. He was certainly an old school coach. The only things he did while he was in Stillwater, as far as winning, was that he beat OU two years in a row (1965 and 1966) and that Arkansas win in 1967. He is also known for having the shortest lived styled helmet in OSU history, the above orange numbered one.
As to the numbers on the helmets, ol' Phil didn't bring 'em with him. They were already here when he got here. It just took him three years of losing in those inherited black helmets before he decided to change them.

Ahhh yes......Good old Phil Cutchin. Remember him well. Still have the seat cushion (although a bit faded) from my time in the stands.

I was 9 years old then, and I remember the bucking bronco logo very well. I think I have some old car decals with that logo stashed away somewhere.

I had a decal in the back window of my car when I arrive on campus in the mid 1960s. It was a big black O boarded in orange with a Cowboy on a bucking horse in the middle. It had OKLA STATE on it.
casdas and I have been looking for a copy of it.
