I haven't counted them, but there seems to be a lot shoulder injuries this year, more than what I remember ever happening in the distant past. Maybe I'm just exposing myself to more information on this than ever before.

Haven't done the research to validate your point - y'all do so much that I feel I can take the hypothesis at face value, so assume it to be true. Sooo....could the increase in shoulder injuries be an unintended by-product of the new "leading with the helmet" tackling rule...?

I really don't think that the new rule was announced soon enough to allow coaches to coach effectively to it. Coaching to avoid this penalty might be putting the shoulders in an awkward position, or at least in more exposure to an injury-position. There might not have been enough time to fully think through a new tackling technique to avoid injuries to both the tacklEE and tacklER. And with most of these boys on the field, there is already 6+ years of mis-taught techniques that have to be corrected when they sign their LOI.

Your observation made me wonder if the increase in shoulder injuries might be the front-end of a learning curve of not only players but coaches and training staff, too. Thoughts? Coach? :cowboy:

Wow, that makes sense.

If this was true, wouldn't we expect to see a drop in head injuries? Since I think what you are saying is the shoulders are taking more abuse now that they aren't leading with the head or hitting the other player in the head anymore?

I don't know...that wasn't part of my question.

I didn't make any kind of statement...but I did ask the question, and asked for thoughts about it. I'd be interested in yours if you have any...:cowboy:

Before I worked too hard to come up with a hypothesis, I'd like to see more concrete data than "It seems like".

Maybe there's no anomoly at all.

Take a look at the shoulder pads of today and you can see they have gotten smaller compared to those you see just on the right.

"It seems" to me that the ground is doing most or a lot of the damage to the shoulders. Every time a player goes down on his shoulder during a tackle, I watch to see if we are going to have another shoulder injury.
