Sorry to hear, Michelle. The longer we have them the harder it is to lose them.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I know how you feel. In Jan 2006, we had to put down our Heidi, a pekinese-poodle mix. She was 19 years old. She survived our move to Plano in 1993. I do believe all dogs go to heaven. Who knows, maybe Desi will meet up with Heidi.
May Desi RIP.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
So sorry about your loss.

Bummer.
I'm not sure my mom has ever recovered from having to have her little shih tzu put down. Just called me in tears. It was terrible.
So, so very sorry for your loss. They are just the sweetest dogs.

For you Michelle:
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.
Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.
I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

I appreciate the kind comments.
I'm taking this one alot harder than any other. I guess b/c I was thinking that I had just turned 27 when she came into my life. She was a gift for my young son on his birthday. Someone to sleep on the end of his bed with him, so he'd never feel alone. The bond they had was ridiculous!
I remember when ryno went off to college, poor Desi mourned him not being in the house about as much as I did! She then became my mom's constant companion.
Through the years I watched her age. She quit playing with squeakies, quit running through the house chasing after me when i'd run from her, and quit playing "blankee" (putting my hand under the covers getting her to bite me)...she lost her sight, her hearing, and even her bark changed.
She probably would have made it another 3-6 months, had I not put her down. I just felt that she was suffering to be here, for all of us.
I think the hardest part on me was when I left the vet. I got down the street and pulled over. I called the vet to tell him to stop, i was coming back to get her, and it was too late. That's when I lost it.
Anyway, we're all missing her pretty bad today. I keep looking over at her empty bed, she's not laying in it snoring. The yorkies keep going over and looking in her bed as well. That sucks too.
Well, like I said, I appreciate the kind remarks. Not sure I could have taken a "It's just a dog." She wasn't just a dog, she was a family member.
She was here when some of the most precious people in my life passed on, so she was the last of them. Except for my mom.
My dad acted like he hated our dog. But when we had to put her down, you could tell it hurt him. And he swore he would not get another dog... a year later, they went out and got another one.

My wife read your post last night and was in tears. We have a Shih Tzu too and I can't imagine losing him or my Dane. The Shih Tzu is my wife's baby and it would just about kill her if we lost him.

It's hard. Real hard. It feels awful without her here. My son is taking is kinda hard as well. She was his baby from the 5th grade (she was his birthday present) until he left for college.
Then our lil "Bella" the 3 pound yorkie got sick sunday. Vomited 6-8 times, wouldn't eat, lethargic, etc....
Took her to the vet first thing monday morning. Her blood sugar was 50, and she was dehydrated. They kept her, ran some tests, and today i picked her up. 24 hours= $650.00. They still don't know what was wrong.
It could possibly be liver shunt (very common in yorkies) but we won't know for 2 weeks. They sent off the bile acid test today. She's not feeling so good. I'm giving her amoxi twice a day.
I'm reaaaaalllly hoping it was a $650.00 tummy ache. With a 3 pounder, you don't have alot of room for mistakes, and after friday, I wasn't taking chances.

Is this how it makes us feel to lose a pet?
